Changed oil and filter for the first time in my 13 a couple days ago, put in a little over 3.5 quarts, started the bike expecting the oil light to come on for a couple seconds but it never did, let it run for a few minutes and shut it off, looked at the oil window and it looked perfect just over half, the next morning gonna ride it to work, pull out of my driveway and onto the road and the red low oil light comes on so I turn around and rode it back in the garage, put it on center stand and look at the oil glass and can't see any oil, so I take truck to work instead, that night when I get home still no oil in the window so I pour in another half quart so that a little over 4 quarts, took it for a couple short rides and the oil level in the glass is now perfect .

Normal, although do not over fill!! The sight glass in the S10 is borderline useless, there is a procedure you must follow to see the correct level in the glass, but as long as you drained all the oil, and then put in the specified amount you should be good to go. I place the bike on the center stand then a block under the front wheel so the bike is dead level fwiw.

Right.

The oil light in these is for low level, not low pressure.

btw - The book says it takes 3.6 qts when the filter is also changed, plus the level will go down a little with lots of highway use. You may find later that you need to add a couple hundred ccs.

3.6 quarts does not work in my Tenere, when I drive it with 3.6 quarts the low oil light comes on and stays on and no oil in the window, mine takes a little over 4 quarts, I have put on about 50 miles with 4 quarts in there and the window shows just over half full like i think it's supposed to.

I don't get an oil level warning using 3.6 qts, but the level shows very low on the window after checking the level as instructed in the manual, i.e. with the bike on the center stand and a level surface, start the engine from cold and allow it to warm to at least 140F. Then shut it off and wait about 5-10 minutes. If I use 3.75 qts. it's perfect.

You aren't kidding about the sight glass, I've really struggled to try and check the oil level, really hard work!

Yes worked for me until I drove the bike then the all the oil in the window disappeared and never came back.
Just curious, do you use the short oil filter or the long?

What filter are you using? There is a specific procedure outlined in the owner's manual for using the sight glass. It's more about engine temp than miles. You're not going to hurt anything if you have a bit more oil in there than spec'd. It's a dry sump design, so how much oil is in the sump Vs the engine is moot. The same amount of oil will be in the engine regardless of how much is in the sump, until you get really, really low, as the engine only holds a quart or so. Less oil, more times it's being cycled thru the engine in a given amount of time.

It's common on the Gen I bikes to use some oil at higher sustained rpms and also common to see oil in the airbox if you have a tad more than necessary in the bike. Not sure if this applies the same to the Gen II bikes.

Pretty odd. I have to put just a tiny smidge under 3.5 in mine, or I get blowby into the airbox until it burns some off.

The difference in using a short vs long filter can be a couple hundred cc's.

That's why I asked which filter he was using. But, I think by the p/n he mentioned, he may be using the short one.

Tenere oil deal is very strange, 3.6 quarts was not enough it caused the red low oil light to come on and no oil showed in the window so I added another half quart of oil and everything was fine for a couple days. Then it started showing over full so I drained some oil out, I've drained some out about 5 times now , not exactly sure how much I've drained out but it must be very close to the extra half quart I had put in when the low oil light was on and no oil in the window, I have changed oil in a lot of different stuff over the years but this Tenere oil deal is different than anything I ever saw before.
