Installing the ABS Unit Cover

Preamble: After we lost a chunk of the rear wheel of our Ténéré at speed during the '19 IBR we lost confidence in it to the extent we were wincing ever time we went over any sort of bumps. That being the case we decided we'd get rid of it so last July I bought a 1250 GSA with the intent of selling the Ténéré (I know, heresy, but bear with me!). There were loads of accessories on the Ténéré like Clearwater lights, RapidBike Evo, dual SatNav mounts and so on and I thought it would be a good idea to remove them all first. I am not a natural mechanic and it took me a full day to get everything off. The day after doing that we decided getting rid of the Ténéré was a a stupid idea as we like riding it so we'd just have to get over the wheel issue and keep both bikes. What with lockdown and a GSA to ride when we're not locked down the Ténéré has been sitting there in a disassembled state ever since.

Fast forward to today.

The Problem: I decided I'd put it back together again this weekend and I'm struggling with something really stupid - the ABS unit cover - not least because it's been such a long time I've completely forgotten how everything fits together.

I've attached a couple of photos showing the cover and the ABS unit. I've marked on them where the various pieces mate but it won't sit there because of the mass of wires I've put a question mark on. I insert the prongs (1&2) into their holes but as soon as I try to lower the rear of the cover into place they ping back out again as the cover pivots on the wires. Is that bunch of wires supposed to sit under the cover or are they supposed to come over the top somehow?

The manual is worse than useless as it doesn't show a picture of the cover in place. I've been trying to find such a picture with Google but have completely failed. If by some chance you have a photo showing the ABS unit cover in situ would you mind posting it please so I can see how it's supposed to fit? Thanks.

The only good thing is that after refitting the RapidBike and loosely putting the tank in place to see if everything worked the bike fired up almost immediately after hitting the starter button so that was a result.

I can't say that I can help you with the cover right now. I would have to look at mine and that will be very late today before I could even begin that process. I did follow your trip on the IBR 19 ride. That wheel incident was very scary. I might add the truck incident at St. Louis I believe was very scary too. It was great to read the blog about the ride. I am very impressed. Best of luck to you on getting the bike back together and on all your future travels.

Thanks very much Mike. I've walked away from the bike now hoping I may get inspiration when I look at it again in the morning.

Unfortunately it looks like a ride for us in this year's IBR isn't going to happen. We're currently banned from foreign travel and this seems likely to continue until the end of June at least.

I don't know if yours is an "ES" or not, but it looks different than my 2014.
There are no wires running over the top of mine. They are all underneath. (except for my SAE extension cord)
Mine is also a lot dirtier than yours.....................

That's really useful, thank you Alan. Now I can see how it should sit.

Yes, it's the electronic suspension model (called a ZE over here) and definitely less muddy! :) There are differences in the cover but they're not huge differences.

Is it my imagination or are you showing the cover in your first pic upside down Kevin?

Hi Eric, nice to hear from you. It's a bit difficult to make out and perhaps I should have taken the photo more from the side but it is up the correct way.

Just my imagination then. :D I don't have a reference bike to look at any more. Glad to hear the S10 runs! I hope you enjoy many more miles on it.

I see you have it figured out already. I didnt think about the es bikes being different. I have a standard suspention. But here is a picture of my bike anyway. Looks about like the pictures already sent to you by SkunkWorks. 20210402_194508.jpg20210402_194455.jpg

Thanks Mike.

Well the cover is back on and the bike is temporarily back together again. Temporarily as I haven't fitted the lights or satnavs back on yet but I'm short of time this weekend and needed to get it back together so it can be shipped to our new-to-us house on Tuesday.

I can't say it was an elegant job as I was basically stuffing the wires wherever they would go to allow the ABS unit cover to sit properly.

I'm a bit perturbed that I have two fairing screws left over and there are two plugs (one circled in the photo, the other underneath it) that aren't attached to anything and I've no idea if they should be.

Thanks again for the photos, they were very useful.
