Installing a satnav.

Picked bike up yesterday and started to fit satnav today before I set off to work. As stated earlier I know next to nothing about electrics so satnav to be fitted direct to battery.
What a pain in the ass! Never know anything like it with the battery. Disconnected the terminals but on re connection the captive nut on the live terminal would slip due to battery being on an angle. I couldn't get any long nose pliers in to hold the nut due to the design of the live lead connection wrapping around the terminal. Finally got it reconnected after a bit of swearing.
2 hours later and bike still in bits in the garage and I need to leave for work. I will complete the 30 minute job tomorrow :D

There is always the accessory socket. I really don't like the idea of a SatNav cradle being live, permanently just in case parasitic drain sets in; your bike, your choice though.

Mine is wired into the aux light connector, which sits at the front under the RH panel, behind the tool roll. The 3 wire connector is aux lights, the 4 wire is for heated grips (Yamaha plug&play) & is still there but redundant on Gen2 ES models.

All now wired up and bike back together. I have a trickle charger if it's going to be a problem, but it was wired direct the battery on my BMW with no problems

On those nuts, just use some folded paper wedged in to hold the nut where it needs to be. Can even leave the paper if you want.

The accessory/cig socket is only good for 3 amps. A number of GPS's and phones now run that much or more with weather, music, etc.

Uhh, CW, he was talking about the 3-connector port down by the tool area, at least that was how I read it...

If so, the 3A limit wouldn't apply, but now I'm not sure which place he meant.

I simply used a screwdriver to gently wedge the nut upwards while I got the screw to start on the nut. I have it down to a fine art now! :)

Ha I tried that but the live cable to the battery folds over to 'box' the terminal so struggled to get the screw driver down. Fingers crossed I don't have to do it again anytime soon but definitely some good tips on here :cool:

some people buy or build a offset spacer to lift the GPS higher on the crossbar.

i got myself a Touratech 590 GPS locking cage... same problem but i bought the offset mount and now it sits perfectly high enought so i can see the turn signals - im 6'4.5"
Gigitt, where did you get off set mount please? ALL SORTED, FOUND THE BRACKET AND ORDERED :p
