Installing a satnav.

Good evening
In a few days I pick up a new to me 2014 Tenere ES. I have a Garmin 590lm satnav which I will be fitting to the bike.
Due to the fact I have zero expertise in bike electrics I fitted the satnav to my last bike (BMW GS800) direct to the battery with no problems whatsoever. I have heard of people saying it can flatten the battery, but the GS would always start first push of the button even when stood for a few months.

So, will this method be ok on the Tenere ?
I also plan to fasten it to the accessory bar above the dash, or will the unit vibrate too much? I have seen the support arms on another thread which I may look into purchasing.

I have tried the search function but can't find any results

Cheers

Richard

No problem in connecting it directly to battery.
(it will of course NOT turn off, when you take key out).
I have heard some having an issue, if the electric pins in the cradle get to wet, then there might be drawn some current.
I have though, for many years, all my Garmin navs connectec like this, with no problems at all.

My sat nav is wired directly to the battery, has been fine for the 2 and a bit years it's been on the bike. Starts first time, every time.
There's only a power draw when the unit is attached, and I presume when not being used the sat nav isn't attached.

Thanks for the quick replies Nikolajsen and Boris, that's my mind at ease. Direct to the battery it is.

As always when not on the bike the satnav unit will be removed.

I have the 590 LM on my S10, and if you put it on the cross brace, you will not be able to see your indicator lights above your dash any more.

I have gotten used to looking at my my indicators directly after a turn to see if they have cancelled properly.

I will have to sit on the bike to see how it looks, I never thought of it covering the indicator lights. Do you get any vibration through the bar giving a blurry satnav screen ?

some people buy or build a offset spacer to lift the GPS higher on the crossbar.

i got myself a Touratech 590 GPS locking cage... same problem but i bought the offset mount and now it sits perfectly high enought so i can see the turn signals - im 6'4.5"

Not on the bitumen, I am waiting for my Pay Pal to get fixed (locked out) to order a set of braces from this forum

I'm 6'3" tall, and it is completely blocked, but I can see the LED front indicators flashing, so I go off them.

Thank you all for the replies. I collect the bike in the morning so a quick blast on it to see what's its like then in the garage for an hour or so before work. Think I may need to get my hand in my pocket again though for a touratech locking mount

Ditto to Gigitt’s comment. I’ve used that setup when I first purchased my bike and 80K miles later it’s still a solid mount and has never vibrated noticeably. -JEP-

You spent yours first!! LOL

The Touratech products really are the best. You buy it once and enjoy it for the life of your bike.

Although not large, the transformer in the sat nav power supply will always draw current even when the sat nav is not connected.
Yes, but the transformer is inside satnav in this model.
So no current draw...
But there is of course always power on the small contact pins, which means that they will "corode" easier

Ah, fair enough. I have a Garmin 340LM and the transformer for that is external. I figured this would be the same. Same rules apply though. There will be a device somewhere in there to convert 12v to 5v.

Yes, no doubt about it. It’s minor but it will eventually drain the battery and much quicker then if you have it connected to the right plug, and depending on the ignition. That is my own experience, not ear say.
