Been a while since I've updated this but ooh and aah I am loving this Ohlin's!!!!

I have the 1111-59/150 L2611 spring in and it is wonderful!!! I have to adjust my preload collar to add some base preload but it is light years ahead of the stock shock.

I am one happy camper!!!!

I'll give more setting numbers for compression and rebound after I adjust the preload collar and have a few more miles on this set up.

That reservoir hose routing sure is funky!

We did some hose re-timing and didn't do a complete shock bleed with re-route on the initial install.

I had to modify the stock route set up some to accommodate the reservoir and the fact that I have the Touratech luggage set up. The mounts impede the stock set up so we tweaked some to get it to work.

As it is much more important to get the function correct, the form can take a back seat until we are sure we have things functioning properly.

James with Super Plush Suspension Tabasco. Same guy I've been working with all along. Can't speak highly enough of his ability to create a suspension that works how you want it to. It's been a a dream to work with him and he's really re-awoken my passion for suspension tuning that I used to be so good at when I raced.

James has been a sounding board to create the characteristics that I want in my suspension based on what I ride and how I ride it. He isn't interested in cookie cuttering a suspension set up. He creates what you want and works with you to understand suspension dynamics and then how to change something to get there.

We have gone back and forth so many times on rate selection for front springs, air gap, oil weight, pitch balance, turn in, geometry, terrain, goals, numbers, etc. It's been a blast! And, my bike is so fun now compared to stock.

I can't wait to get the prepload collar wound up some so I can really get the sag spot on so I can finish the fine tuning for what I am after.

I agree 100% about getting the function. Aftermarket suspension is AMAZING compared to stock.

Any details on the front? I'm playing that game right now. Although, I think you have AK-20s in there? Either way, the oil height/air gap will translate for those of us running stock based forks. Sag? Spring rate?

What do you about the preload collar "wound up"? What is holding you from setting proper sag?

All the front suspension info is here...

http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=3172.msg55253#msg55253

Since doing the front changes James and I have spoken extensively about running a higher rate spring and lowering the fork oil height (increasing air gap). We're going to hold off for now as the incidence where I am at full compression on the front where I am finding some harshness come back in is such a small percentage of the overall that it isn't worth tuning better for that area at the expense of what I like in other areas.

I have a hydraulic adjuster. The adjuster needs to be moved down, thereby increasing static preload on the spring. To do this I have to remove the shock, remove the lock pin, undo the lock ring and add more preload statically. Once I've done this I reinstall and I have full range of my hydraulic preload adjuster again.

Currently I have the hydraulic all the way in and amy only at 61 mm race sag. I need 57 mm with the hydraulic adjuster all the way out. This means I need to add about 5 mm of static sag.

Here's an exact quote from James.......

Glad to hear the initial impression is so good. The addition of some preload spacing on the shock should get us where we want to be on sag, and I think that is the best way forward rather than more spring rate. The increase should be as easy as adjusting the set position of the lock rings.
On the clickers both of those changes are fine if the feeling improves. You may like it back out at ten on compression once the sag is in the window and the shock is holding onto some more spring force.
As far as the forks are concerned I think we can make the setting as good as we need with the stock components at much lower cost. There will always be some finite improvement when using premium quality components like the Ohlins drop ins. I think in this application where we are not road racing the thing or running up against a design limitation in the stock forks we should be able to get that stock cartridge to do what we need it to do. Let us know when you want to move forward

I have the final numbers for my rear suspension set up now that it is all good to go.

I went back down to James' shop and we finalized the set up as follows;

As indicated in my previous posts I wasn't able to get my optimum race sag setting and needed to add base preload via the collar on the shock body. We added 8mm from the Olhlin's supplied collar setting and that gave us the following;

19mm of static sag

57 mm of race sag

I am running 16 clicks of compression damping

I am running 18 clicks of rebound damping

These numbers are derived with no cases on the bike, me in ride gear, and the hydraulic preload adjuster all the way out.

needless to say, these are quite literally perfect numbers!

Once I added my Touratech Zega Pro side cases and top case along with my tool kit and "normal" stuff I ride with I added 10 rounds of preload to the adjsuter and had my perfect race sag numbers again.

I cannot speak highly enough of James, his knowledge, and his competency. He refuses to take money to take money. He is methodic and detailed in his approach.

I'll repost this along with my front numbers in my original suspension post.

19mm is a fair amount of static sag. You probably could use a lighter rate spring and get a more compliant ride out of the rear. What rate did you wind up with?

I need HELP. Here's my figures one up.This is without all my gear, tank 1/2 full and HT panniers empty.I do solo camping and two camping. Two up the m/c just pushes throught the corners. I only ride Two up say 30% of the time. The problem is if I change things for two up, and I think the m/c will be so stiff it will just beat me & my bad back up. Comb. rider & pillion Weight is 370lb. I was think the 800lb spring and spacer, but with these figures maybe the 900lb is going to be better.I need to get this figured out as I leave for Id,MT,Baniff Jasper NP in mid August and I want the M/C to be better than it is now. Help.
Static Ht 33mm
Ride Ht 83.

You do not want to set the bike around the 30% usage. You would be better served to set the bike for the 70% usage and ten use the adjuster to off set the 30% usage.

You've got two issues with the bike - the front and the rear.

The front has a dual rate spring and is harsh under load.

The rear needs more control overall and, depending on your weight when in your 70% usage, the correct spring rate.

What is your weight during your 70% usage?

Since I'm 215 you could do well to go with my set up and you would be most happy.

I do have a spacer that I'm not using if you chose not go with an aftermarket shock and only want to use an SAE spring. Review my threads on suspension for info and also look up AC for his thread on the work he did on his through Penske.

Phil,
I would like to get the spacer from U. What spring would U think would work best 800lb or 900lb. Oh BTW the figures I got was with the shock in full preload. Too bad I didn't know this sooner as Tim is down at Mayer getting his seat adjusted. And he could have drop off the spacer.

850 would be ideal and is what I have on my Ohlin's. Eibach has an 850.

Hit me off line and I'll get it sorted to get it to you.

Phil what is the spacer like. I am not familiar with rear spring spacers.

Phil,
Just got the phone and have a Eibach 850lb spring coming. So I need the spacer soon.
PM to ya. Boom! Somehow my original PM to you didn't get there. My iphone Tapatalk ap has crashed a few times over the week, grrrrr, so that might explain it. Well, that and I have been at work so I'm not able to respond as quickly as I like. Ask your friend about the fatal car crash on Blue Ravine. Yea, I was first arriving truck on that horrible wreck!
