Increased MPG in Sport Mode with Uni Filters?

While coming home a week ago from a riding class I decided to put the bike in sport mode. I don't know what prompted me to do this, I guess for the heck of it. I was surprised to note my MPG went up, way up when running down interstate 25 at 75 mph. I found this counter intuitive.

In SPORT mode: Yesterday I topped off the tank and went for sort-of typical ride but with fewer trails than normal. I reset my average MPG reading on the bike when I filled up. Prior to this weekend I was getting hit 48 to mid 49 mpg checking at fill up. The meter read about 49.5 MPG.

I put just under 200 miles on it (rode up Rollins Pass 5 ½ miles before getting turned around by snow for you local Colorado guys). I hit a couple of good sections of improved gravel road that were wet from lots of rain of late. Also did state highways where the speed limit is 55 or 65 mph as well as interstate highway at 75 mph. At this point the average mpg is 53 and change. I have not filled up yet.

Again, I’m surprised by this. I did realize I have one difference, I installed Uni foam filters last fall. I can’t get over the way the bike handles, wow does it have some juice now. I can roll on the gas in 6th gear running 75 mph and the bike has notably more power.

Is anyone else running Uni foam filters and if so have you noted the same thing in sport mode?

I’m going out shortly to work on some slow speed maneuvering drills and expect sport mode to make it easier. I expect I won’t have to use much throttle at all and just use the clutch at idle to keep the speed low. I’ll also try to get some mile on her so I can check the mileage at fill up. I’ll post the results later.

Here is my logic. I always ride the bike in Sport mode and TC off. Firstly, I believe it removes all restrictions such as engine brake and the TC does not have to apply braking. It also allows for better acceleration and obviously more power. When you have the extra power with less restrictions and choose to ride as per normal, the engine will work less and give better mpg.

Well the slow speed stuff and interstate at 80 + mph on the speed-O brought the on board display to 50.5 mpg. When I filled it I calculated 49.75 mpg.

I have to say I really like running it in sport mode, although I'm sure I'll get used to it and it'll become 'normal'.

Derekj, I don't think I've ever had the TC kick in on pavement, only trails and gravel roads. I notice the extra power on the interstates/express ways when trying to stay/get out of car's blind spots. Just an easy roll on of the throttle and I'm clear and everybody sees me....
I have noted at 55 or 60 mph the display generally shows well about 50 mpg. Either way the engine seems to be efficient and plenty of fun to ride.

::022:: the Australian bikes come with the unfiltered fitted so I don't know any different. However I now leave mine in S for that very reason. I tried T used more fuel and less fun. Tried the clutch mod too thirsty. Now it stays in S
