I'm ticked off.

Photobucket for years has been the site where many people on this, ADV, and other forums have put photos to post. Just like radio ads or TV, the terms of service were that you put up with their ads and they let you post your photos. To link from their site is called 3rd party use.

As of June 28, 2017 and without fore warning, Photobucket changed their terms of service. Putting your photos on their site is still free, but to post images on this or other forums (3rd party use) NOW REQUIRES A $399/YEAR PLAN. I have 2,415 photos there, many of which have been used to create "how to" posts in this and other forums, simply share trips, jokes, etc. For example, the thread regarding how to lube the shifter is no longer showing the photos I posted. Moving to another host will be extremely difficult and time consuming. Further, doing some Google research, it appears that they are not charging till people have a larger number of photos.

"Try this little taste of crack cocaine, Sonny."

They added ads to the point that I had to click on 4 pop-ups every time I changed pages on their site. The background scripts they were running slowed my computer to a crawl. After this unilateral Photobucket TOS change and shakedown, I'm fed up and looking for ideas on where else to go. I don't mind paying a fee, but $400/year is a shake-down and I refuse to pay that much. Plus, what's to stop them from demanding $800 next year?

2daMax posted one idea, regarding Google Images.

What other ideas do all of you have?

Re: NEED Photo hosting site list

You do know photo hosting sites are like motorcycle seats and handlebars? :)

Nice rant though. (I wish I could have heard it in person just to see what you sound like when you're ticked off)

I like Microsoft's ecosystem. Ironically, it is more "cross platform" than any other.
IOS, Android, and of course your government issued desktop. lol

Re: NEED Photo hosting site list

I had to do some searching, but I found that my pics hosted on Google are still present. With so much consolidation these days, finding an alternate to Photobucket may be a challenge...

I understand your frustration though. I used to use Imageshack.us and recently, I had noticed that my images were missing too. Yep. "Please subscribe!!" for some stupid yearly fee. Yeah no thanks ::005::

I have been using http://www.mobypicture.com for several years without any issues...
I have two accounts with over 3600 pictures...

"Directly share your photos, videos and audio with your friends on your favorite social sites: facebook, twitter, flickr, youtube, and more."

My links have worked successfully on this forum and advrider.com .....

I had the same unwelcome note this morning. Photobucket has recently seemed to go out of the way to make it difficult to use the free model of their service. It appeared to be an attempt to make it so painful to use that you would give up and buy their subscription plan. I didn't see broadside coming this morning. I'm irritated the old ride reports I used to enjoy checking out will no longer have the photos. But that's always been the risk using any 3rd party like Photobucket.

So I guess I'm not totally surprised they are making some last ditch effort to stay relevant. I suspect it won't work. Had they given some warning and made it a reasonable fee I most likely would have started sending them some cash. Since they did neither, I assume they are on the way out of business and will look to elsewhere.

All free photo sharing sites will go that way, it's only a matter of time.

If you're technically minded using Amazon web services S3 is hilariously cheap & you will never encounter that sort of problem.

Re: NEED Photo hosting site list

There is thread on TWT about this too: http://www.twtex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=114675&highlight=500. I actually suspect that there are threads allover the web about it. I'm affected and I only have a very few pictures on there. I only used it for third party linking. I think I would recommend smugmug. It's wrapped up with same people that do ADV, so they are well aware of the issues of forum posting and with our community. There is fee for the service, but if you don't need a lot of features it's not terribly unreasonable. On the TWT thread there seemed to be issues with Google. There are pictures there that I could see and now I can't see and that others never could see. I think I trust smugmug before any of the others.

Re: NEED Photo hosting site list

Since Photobucket made their extortion plan active I've been attaching photos through Tapatalk. So far it has done everything I need so no more photo hosting for me. This is not the first photo host site to do this and wont be the last. I only need to get screwed once to learn.

Re: NEED Photo hosting site list

The following information is from a friend who hosts a major Flight Simulation Forum.

Here's his solution:

Hi March,

Thanks for getting in touch, it sounds like you are in for a fun time this year.

Ok, so in order to set up your own picture hosting, you need a web server, which it looks like you have, and a sql server, which it looks like you have. Essentially, setting up the image hosting site is the same as setting up a forum.

The software comes from here: https://chevereto.com/ it's a one off cost with lifetime updates and no subscription so, quite a good deal really.

I hope that answers everything.

I ended up going with buying the basic subscription at Smugmug.com.

I just re-posted a lot of what were Photobucket photos from the new Smugmug account, so the photos are restored. See page 10 of that thread.
I only see two pages in this thread, but I must be doing something wrong. It's no worry, I will find all the threads about trailer hitches with the search tool.

It doesn't seem like the backlash has been bad for them. They've managed to double revenue, at least for the short term, and cut down their bandwidth and cost too
I would imagine. The note in the article about Imgur's terms of service was interesting. There is a good amount of talk on the web about using them as an alternative.
