Ignition lead confusion

Hi all,
I am just doing some trouble shooting on my 2010 to find a surging issue and found when I was testing coils/plugs in Diagnostic mode the lead positions don’t tie up with the d:30-d:33 procedure.
The manual states pg8-50
d:30 =#1left
d:31=#1right
d:32=#2left
d:33=#2right

When I connected the coils and tested the spark d:31 and d:32 were mixed up.
The strange thing is the wiring was physically the same as the wiring routing diagram on pg 2-67.
If I wire it as the diagnostic positions suggest I will have to cross the leads on the 2 middle plugs, the left cylinder loom comes from the left side of the frame and the right cylinder loom comes from the right.
Not sure which to trust, the routing diagram or the diagnostic procedure... the two don’t agree.
Has anyone else found this?
If it’s not right I guess it’s a wasted spark at the wrong time in the wrong cylinder.
It has always had an irregular idle so it may have never been right...so confused!

That is really strange. How about just swap the coils and see how if it runs?

Yes was going to try that but I would have to strain the looms... guess it must have been correct and it’s another typo in the manual

Maybe a bad coil? I know my buddies Super Tenere had one that drove him nuts. He was chasing down a leaky vacuum line that did not exist.

I no longer have a FSM or bike to look at, but my experience with the Yamaha FSM has been that the cable routing diagrams are always correct, but sometimes differ from the diagrams in procedure sections of the manual.

The whole point of the cable routing diagram is to avoid errors like this.

Thanks, I have put it back together as per the routing diagram. According to the existing workshop markings the left and rights were mixed up but guess it doesn’t really matter.

The coils all tested the same but I know these can change with temperature. It seems to surge worse when it’s hot and high altitude so it could be a coil. I have put it all back together with the power commander disconnected and it test rode ok. I’ll give it a decent run in the new year.

Hi MikeinNZ,
I'll be in Aus and Zealand in later February and hoping to ride a bike there.
I've got me M license, Canadian and an International M as well. Are there any rental shops that would rent me a bike for a few days or more.?? I ride a 2018 Tenere.
Thanks

Hi Shumba,

Yes there are bike rental companies in the major city’s, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. You’ll struggle to find a S10 as they seem to stick with BMW’s.
Sing out if you get close to Rangiora, North Canterbury and we share a beer.

My ZX14R has a similar issue. I think I’ve tracked it down to the idle speed control valve (not sure if the S10 has one?)

NZ is my favourite place in the world. I’ve walked some of your tracks. Amazing place. Camped on Anapai beach for 3 days on my own for the whole time. Been twice and hope for one more trip before I’m too old

Ok, thanks for the information. I'll have a look on Dr. Google as well. I'd be content with a smaller bike m 250 or a 500 cc. something.
