Thanks for posting the update. Fingers crossed. 214F for temp? What was causing that, just a hot day and stuck in traffic, or ??? Could have been something old school like vapor lock. ;)

It was hot a little and slow riding through the Reservation don't want to get hassled by the Tribal Police then I hit the stop sign and pulled the clutch in and died..
I did pop the cap yesterday nice clean blue coolant at correct level.

Also at one point that day when i was at the hardware store returning home it sat for about 30 minutes or so in the parking lot it would not start at all engine light came on after WAT and a few attempts it started and that's when the RPM's went off the hook started idling at 3 to 4k had to shut it off and start it again twice then it started to die again and nursed it home down the block.. ::007::
I will post an update tonight as I am taking it to work today, not a far ride.

Apparently this is not the only time this has happened and not just this Yamaha model. lets see who steps up with a conclusion or clue to this mystery.

So I've been thinking about this issue for over a year now. While I'm bummed that it's happening to others, I'm certainly glad to have others thinking/working on a solution.

I would offer the observation that if we can start definitively ruling out possibilities that we might hone in on the underlying issue. Presuming we all have the same problem (and it sounds very much like we do) I will offer an observation and see if there's a flaw in my logic: It would seem that if the problem goes away by simply shutting the bike off and restarting, it is not a mechanical problem. On several occasions, I've had some/all of the symptoms described below and by others, and on several of those occasions, a simple restart (key off) and all was well with no indication of any problem. If it were a pinched hose, vacuum leak, bad gas, etc, how could it simply go away with a restart?

I started these threads, with some more information about the situation:

214 degrees is the norm in New Mexico sitting at a light but not while riding at 55mph!
It has done nothing weird today at all so far so good? :-X

So as I asked before anyone of you riders have had a flash of your ECU lately?
Not trying to point fingers as I had mine done about two months or so ago..

Coming from a Fuel Injection car theory, the idling is controlled by a Idle Air control valve with ECU inputs. The coolant temperature determines if the Idle Air control valve will open larger to let in more air (such as a cold start) or open smaller. The ECU controls the opening of the solenoid.

Back to the S10, which I have no knowledge on idling mechanisms, perhaps the way the ECU control the idling is through the butterfly valves (like my Versys 650) opening. In my car butterfly valves, I noticed it can get gummy and greasy and especially on colder days, these gummy stuff hardens and may cause a more severe sticky issues compared to warmer days. Did u notice more frequency during colder days? Throttle body cleaner dissolves this and I use it once every 20k km. I would spray generously on the butterfly valves, and into the orifices of the Idle Air valve.

It seems that these butterfly valves are sticky (high idling and erratic idling). I hope to learn more on the S10 systems once I get my new bike. Coming soon.

I did open up the throttle and sprayed a generous amount of Throttle body cleaner down the ports.
It does seem to be idling normal to just 100k under, could be it was a bit sticky.
Now the cerebral paranoia is setting in, like what or when again? :'(
I just need to>>>>>

::021::

And at least have chat with my mechanic.

One other question, my intake temp was 66 degrees at 55 to 60 mph this morning Rad was sitting at 176 to 180, 181 is that a normal temp?

I have the same issues that Nimbus described. Issue went away for most of the winter, acted up a few times early this summer and has been mostly fine until the other day. It's such and annoying issue.

Could it be a faulty O2 sensor? Another Tenere owner exhibited intermittent stalling, but only when hot. He took it to the shop, of course they couldn't replicate the issue. He had them put a heat gun on the sensor and sure enough, it stalled. They replaced it under warranty and now it runs fine. May not be the exact same issue as most of you are having since it doesn't sound like heat is a common factor, but I figured I'd throw it out there just to muddy up the picture a bit. Good luck! Hopefully you'll find the cause soon. Cheers.

This is interesting as I am thinking the heat may be the problem..
Been riding today and no hiccups.

Nimbus, I would have to agree, doesn't feel like a mechanical issue.

The key-off trick works most of the time, I've gotten to the point where I'll key-off/key-on/restart if I get the slightest hint that it's acting up..

You might want to read my post if you have not already. It is in the same section of power and exhaust and is titled "hard starting and other problems". Perhaps it will help. I used to suffer from the same problems you have. I have been trouble free for months and over 4000 miles.

Took it apart today cleaned the throttle body butterflies cleaned and lubed the throttle cable found a small what appeared to be a deep scratch into the vacuum cap below the battery side throttle body couldn't tell if it was a hole I replaced it, the split vacuum line on the other side was fine.
all the boots are snug and tight air filter was still in good see through condition, then dumped some Lucas injector cleaner into the tank.
I took it for a 25 mile spin the only thing that did seem to happen the idle is running a 1k dropped to around 900 fore a moment at first but not 12 to 11k like before. I still plan on taking it in and have the TB's and idle adjusted and looked at just to be safe.

Yesterday when the issue started the motor temp was hitting 214 today it was at a steady 140 to 190 I let it climb to 211 as the fan already had kicked on before that I let it sit running nothing happened, shut it off waited and it restarted with no issues still idle at 1k.
My guess the butterflies had a bit of gunge on them, but that's just that a guess..

I hate when an unidentified problem happens only once you now live in fear it will happen again.
I will take it to work tomorrow and see if it acts up. ::010:: ::010:: ::010:: ::010::

Does this recall not sound a bit familiar.

I have a 2018 getting ready to take in for 600 mi service in those miles have had it stall 3 times the latest was today getting off the freeway pulled in the clutch and it died rolling down the ramp about 15 mph let the clutch back out while down shifting chirped the tire and relit. Other Time pulling into a turn pocket I pulled in the clutch and it died and was hard to restart had to crank it for 20 seconds and give fuel to relight. 10mi commute temperatures have been mild when it’s happened. I saw someone who wedged a fuse in a clutch switch to stop a similar issue. I’m not sure if it pertains to my year and model.

That doesn't make sense on the clutch jumper. The jumper is used (more so on a Gen 1) to bypass the restrictions on the first three gears that Yamaha has by making the ECM think the clutch is always pulled in. That way it is using the "idle" map, which does not have the restrictions. If you pull the clutch in, and it dies, it would be no different than with the mod.

I think your best bet is to have the dealer check the sync, which can help. Other than that, this engine is tight new, and time is what solves it.

Forget the fuse stuffed into the clutch. Please. It's a hack people use to throw the timing curve off and won't help your issue anyway.

Honestly, at 600 miles this is actually pretty common and no big deal on new bikes. I had it occur on my '12 when new. It goes away as the bike loosens up. Nothing is really 'wrong', it's just a tight motor at this point.

Like EricV wrote.
My 2017 did the same the first....I don't know......2000-3000 miles...
And then suddenly you think "Heck, when did it die last time"..

My gen 1 has done all of the above. Been flashed with a PCV for a few years. It hasn't stalled since it was almost new. It could have been me doing it. Cycling the key usually gets it. Mine idle varies from 1100 to 1200 rpm alot. Its been doing it so long. I don't even notice it unless I look at the tach.
