That really seems odd that he hadn't even swung a leg over the bike (or a similar one) prior to the event. The logistics of just getting there have to be immense, it just doesn't seem like a rider who has completed a few of these wouldn't at least ensure the bike is going to fit them. That's not even covering the fact that the bike isn't factory street legal anywhere in the USA and is a poor choice for this event.

Has to be a story involved, would like to hear it.

The Spotwala Tracker animations for the 2 legs completed so far have been released. An IBA group member recorded the animations and has uploaded to YouTube - makes it a little easier to view.

You can see that most of the riders rest about the same time. Looks to be a pretty interesting event. I imagine for the first time entrants it would be all about getting the easiest bonuses possible so as to not time out at the checkpoints.

I wonder how many entrants are not running aux tanks? I know that the rally masters do not encourage aux tanks. 11.5 gallons is a lot of fuel. For the smaller bikes it makes sense. For the big couches like the Super Tenere and FJR it's almost like cheating.

Looks like another BMW final drive failure for John Coons he was in 18th place but probably won’t be able to finish.

The winner was on the Hayabusa. I have never ridden one but I am guessing that was an uncomfortable ride
Actually, not too bad. They are really set up like a sport touring bike and many people use them for that purpose.

The only KTM entered was by Michael Boge didn’t finish, has anyone heard what happened ?
From the information that I have, the bike finished (as did the Harley Pan America) but the DNF means they didn't get enough overall points to be considered finishers of the rally. There is a minimum threshold (80,000 points I believe) to be considered a "finisher".

It looks like 80,000 points is the cutoff. Several riders got the point value while doing less than 10,000 miles. I don't really know how all of it works, seems like you have to be half crazy and 50% insane.
I'll admit I have considered trying to enter, even though I have exactly 0 rally experience. Of course, that was back when I had a bike as well. For me, part of the appeal is figuring out a feasible route to maximize points, probably even more so than doing the actual ride.

Yeah, I think the route planning is a huge part of it. Once you get a comfortable bike and have practiced riding long distances, the miles are not that difficult but the mental gymnastics involved in figuring out how to get from one place to another while hitting those out of the way places and then to make it to wherever you need to be the next day have to be challenging.

Perhaps a one or two day rally, with less miles would be pretty fun to try.

The IBR is so interesting to me and I really enjoy following it. I read the leg bonus's and rally wide bonus's and combo bonus's and look at a map and think how I would try to pick up points if I were a long distance rider. Then I think about the weather the construction delays the traffic jams and road closures and think there is no way that can be done. How ever when I am out riding at my own pace enjoying time away from work every couple years I keep the bonus stops in mind and visit them myself. I can see just how difficult it really is to pick some of them up and I really enjoy learning interesting facts they tend to make bonus locations. I did go up on Mt Everts in Colorado two years ago because I learned of it following the IBR. It was incredible but doing that at night to get a bonus I don't know! I do love the event and following it. Keep up the good work IBR
