This is an interesting rally for sure. I have been following it for years but it did not ever really appeal to me. I'm more of an off road guy and always enjoyed the challenges of off highway endurance events that require navigation and logistics that differ greatly from on pavement riding.

It's a mind blower that there are humans that actually enjoy doing multiple days of high miles with lack of sleep and challenged motor skills. For a young guy I can kind of understand. For older dudes at retirement age I'm of the opinion it's not the smartest thing to do.

Yeah, I think the route planning is a huge part of it.
My wife and I were discussing the planning involved for just the standard IB on my Beta. We wrote everything down step by step and had a plan A, B, and C for fuel, rest stops, possible breakdowns, etc.

Then you have the issues that have you rethinking your decision to event finish it. I came so close to calling it and being picked up. I had no rear brake for almost the last 700 miles of the ride. Had it been the front brake I would have definitely ended the ride.

Times this by 11 days, add in bonus stops, and picture taking. That is really hard to comprehend. Add in the cheaters and rule stretchers who take the event as a way to get over on the Rally Master and do everything in their power to get a finisher pin by any means.

Cheating is NOT something you associate with the IBR. I personally know and have ridden with a previous finisher, and there is a strong sense of honor, and a great deal of pride involved in solving the puzzle the Rally Master has created. It is no longer "sit here, twist that", it's about planning, it's about strategy, and its about tackling a challenge that damn few people will undertake.
