Ibex crash bars

After a wee fall yesterday in the ‘pair o knees’ I’m now needing to replace the OE left crash bar. As I’m mainly a road rider I really don’t want a huge set of scaffolding like the Altriders. I know most will say there the ones, but they’re not for me. I like the look of these Ibex ones on Amazon. So the big question is do any of you have experience of them?

That's how I am. A couple of us were lucky e nough to get a pair from Mastech before they stopped making them. The IBEX you posted are similar in size, and price. Here's another variation. I don't know if the upper portion is included or not: Hepco & Becker 501.4531 00 01 Engine Guard for Yamaha XT1200Z Super Tenere | Accessories International (accessoryinternational.com)

Do you mean the Mastechs? I can't find a Tenere application though.

What I liked about the Mastech is that when the bike falls, the lower bar keeps the side off the ground and the upper bar doesn't let it tip over. Not even the rear touches the ground. since the lower bar touches the floor before, with a slider on the lower bar… the farther the side is from the floor. Although the upper bar is further out, the lower bar hits the ground before…

What I like about them, is that the distance from where they mount to the bike to the top of the top bar is a short distance. That reduces the "lever effect". The longer a lever is the smaller amount of force on one end is needed to make it move. And having a small lever helps prevent the top of the bar from being bent/pushed into the radiator/tank.

Y'all engineers out there can probably explain that a lot better.

I have the Mastech too, and have put them to test repeatedly with pretty good results. They came with the the bike when I got it, and I probably would have gone with something with higher fan coverage. They are a pain to remove and reinstall during valve adjustments as the bolts have some restricted access (the bars block sockets on a couple bolts). Even worse now with the RideOnAdv bash plate that uses the same mount points, and have to be lined up to get bolts started. I've gone with Hex Flange Bolts and a ratcheting wrench which seems to work. Battery replacement is tight but works. I've pretty much given up on repainting after drops.WIN_20221106_15_44_52_Pro.jpgWIN_20221106_15_47_01_Pro.jpg

I’m back home after my euro adventures. Have washed the bike and had a closer look, and tbh the OE plastic bumper has done its job pretty well. The only other damaged area is the handguard and the tip of the mirror. I’ve taken another look at the Ibex bars and I’m not convinced about the way they mount. The Mastech ones seem to have the full diameter tubing right to the mounting points, obviously nice and strong. The Ibex ones use a flat plate bracket that connects the bars to the mounting point. And there’s an extra bit of bar that extends backwards and in to the area behind the cylinder head. Not sure if it attatches there or not, but that would worry me if it did. Could it cause more damage than it saves in a fall?

Part of me wonders if a pair of good old fashioned R+G crash bungs wouldn’t be as usefull? I’ve got a few kicking around somewhere, I might have a wee play over the weekend.

So no chance of Mastech ones, never sold in uk by the look of it and no longer sold in US. Can’t find the Hepco+Beckers ones for sale here either. So it looks like the Ibex are my only choice if I don’t want the full scaffolding of Givi, Altrider or Heed. Doesn’t look like Touratech make theirs anymore either.

Must admit I’m starting to prefer the HB ones, I like that they pick up the bottom rad mount. No info on whether the Ibex ones do, and there’s been no reply to my questions to them….. Buying in from Germany…would I get hit with import taxes etc? £238 from them direct, but a uk seller on ebay has them at £243 delivered.

edit….. just realised thats motobins in the uk, so I guess any import taxes are already included. Might have to raid the piggy bank and get them ordered.
