I have decided not to order a S10

My local dealer wants MSFP and I believe he has some ordered for the floor. So I am going to roll the dice and see what happens after he receives them. My wife needs surgery soon and I have two bikes. One down for a complete rebuild and one with the heads off for some tweaking (will be running in 2 weeks) so I am not missing out on riding.

Truth of the matter is that the S10 is a major shift for me after 30+ years of Harley's and choppers. So I've decided to take in a little slow. Ordering a s10 without ever touching one or have ever ridden a duel sport of sport bike is a little much for me right now.

You never know I could still buy one off the floor in June before most of you take delivery. Just kidding, wish all of you the best of luck with your bikes.

A tough decision, but if you're not ready, you're not ready. I agree that it is a leap of faith not to be able to try one out. Fair enough. I at least got to sit on one in January. Sure felt good. Best of luck with whatever bike you end up with. And with the surgery, too. R

I never met a bike I didn't like. With apologies to Will Rogers. R

If you get a chance to touch and feel one in June at your dealer, and you like it, I would feel fine that you get yours before I get mine. Hope all goes well with your wife's surgery.

I'm surprised a dealer would demand MSRP for a bike that would be in and out in a few days. As far as I know allocations are not limited. I wouldn't doubt this dealer is going to try for a premium price (MSRP+) on the bikes he's ordered for the floor. Odds are he'll probably get it.

Not sure how far you are from Charlotte NC but Team Charlotte Motorsports is hosting the Yammi trailer with demo rides on Apr 15&16. Might be worth the drive to check out a S10 and ride one then reeally make an informed decision just something to think about.

Hi Pat,
I don't think you are that far from Cullman,AL, but, D&H Cycle has one of the cheapest prices for the ST in the country at 11,999.00 with a 100.00 document fee. They require a 1000.00 deposit which makes the bike financed at 10,999.00. This is a small "Mom and Pop" dealer, and from what I've read they are top notch folks to do business with. Have been for a lot of years.

Thanks for the positive comments guys.
Vince thanks for the heads up. I'll be driving through Charlotte from Atlanta on the 15th. I will be stopping by.

Just as long as they ride at the back of the group. ;D

All kidding aside: this would be a hard decision for many that have never even seen the bike in person or not had the chance to ride a similar bike.

Good luck with whatever you decide Pat!!

Everyone needs to find the right time for a new bike. I expect there will be a few around on showroom floors. If you do find one this summer and like what you see snag it while you can. Considering the price increases I am seeing on some 2011 models, I fully expect the 2013 Tenere prices to increase a grand or two (if they keep importing them). I just saw someone on ADV pay over $10K cash for a new WeeStrom. 2011 KLRs went up a grand. Bargains are disappearing fast.

Pat,

I ran into the MSRP or nothin line at two local dealers, one of which I have bought three bikes from. I found a shop 40 minutes from home who was willing to deal on the price and they got my business,. I thought long and hard about buying the S10. I have been riding Honda STs (1100 & 1300) since 1994. But I had a chance to spend some time on a BMW R1200GS and found that I really likely the ergonomics of it. So it was not too big a leap of faith for me. As the S10 is very similar to the BMW. I hope that the Super Tenere will become part of Yamahas line up so that folks do not feel like they have to opt in on the PDP. I have heard numbers all over the map and who knows what level needs to be reached in order for TPTB to be happy. I am glad that Y amaha decidee to import it at all. Anyway, it sounds like you have a possible option to buy a bike that your dealer has ordered for stock so all's well.

You gotta go with your instincts. I know I wouldn't pay RRP for anything. I'd hate to be in the market like the rest of you. I was very lucky to be able to buy my XT1200Z straight out of the box. I buy what I want when I want it. If I can't take it with me I'll buy something else. I never wait and I never queue for anything. Hope that doesn't sound too arrogant. In my line of business life's too short to wait for anything. :( :)

I see you are closer to Garner and Teampowersports in Garner will be having demo rides on April 22-23. I hope to see you there too.

Swagger,

I can understand not wanting to wait.......I'm struggling with that myself and thinking of looking at the Triumph 800 xc which should be in the dealer showrooms this month..... ;)

My greatest discouragement is the wait. I would have more patience if I was told that I would have my bike by a certain date. At the moment I am on four wheels commuting to work daily. I do not have any motorcycle presently. The weather is getting nicer here in South Carolina and bikers are on the road everywhere. Also, You should never ever have to pay MSRP unless there is absolutely no competition in a 50 mile radius. I flew to New York once to buy a GPZ1100 just because the dealers here would not sell me it at a reasonable negotiable price. After the cost of shipping and airline tickets, I still saved about $400 bucks flying to New York.
As for my Super T, I did at least get a chance to sit on it at the IMS. I have no choice at the moment but stick it out as I left a non-refundable deposit ($1,000.00). I know $500.00 was the minimum. However, after August I will begin to Moan and Groan and begin seeking steps to be refunded. I commend all of you that have been waiting patiently over 6 months or will be waiting over 6 months shortly. Another thing, from reading most the post on this forum, there is much to say about the character of those interested in a Super Tenere. Everyone seems to possess one or more of the following traits, patience, understanding, compassion, adventure like mindedness, givingness, and/or just straight genuine people. I am proud to be among you. To Pat In NC, best wishes to your wife and whatever decision you make in regards to motorcycles.
Thank you for listening. I am just venting because I am not riding on this Sunny Carolina Day!

Remember the wait is only temporary. I would bet that we all have our bikes within a few weeks of one another. There are the Tempting Tigers on the way and I could see some jumping for these. I jumper from the Tiger to the Tenere because of the technology, positive reviews and my outstanding history with Yamaha. I may be freaking out as well if I sell my other bikes.

I can understand that - but if the alternative is that that Super Tenere was not coming to the US at all, I'm very happy to wait. Hell, it's $7000 cheaper than most other countries. I'm treating it like Yamaha are PAYING ME to wait. Easy money!

Not so easy I know when you don't have an alternative ride on a sunny day, but still not unbearable I wouldn't think. Buy a cheap dirt bike in the mean time...

How do you tell you have a crap dealer? He's the one that asks for twice the required deposit. I don't know what deal you got, maybe it was worth while, but if not extremely good I would have been out the door immediately. As for moaning and groaning - give your dealer hell about the extra $500 he charged, but Yamaha was very clear about their $500 being non-refundable (although I know some people have got theirs back - that was the dealer though not Yamaha).

One thing I find a bit disturbing about your attitude is your seeming reluctance to cut Yamaha any slack after the disaster in Japan. May not be true but comes across a bit that way.

Trevor,

Forgive me for being vague. The dealer did not charge me an extra $500.00 deposit. In January, I gave an extra $500 just because I had extra at the time. As for my attitude, perhaps I could cut Yamaha a little more slack. But, what is wrong with wanting to be well informed? If I knew my delivery date is going to be in November, maybe I could decide to purchase another Yamaha Product that is available. Hmmm. Maybe a FJR1300? Thanks for your straight forwardness.
