I won,t be off-roading mine (planning on getting an XT700/750 in time also) and I want to keep the weight down and prefer a clean look. Famous last words but I have never dropped or crashed a bike in forty years... that's done it... so now when I do drop it will the little stock bar protect the side panels. I am hoping to fit bark busters in time if they has anything to do with it! Thanks.IMG_3204.JPG

Yeah, you're definitely over due, and now that you've said it. . . . I went with these because I too wanted something compact. I think they'll protect what I want to protect, and they allow battery access without removing them. They bolt onto where the factory dod-dads go. They're made by Mastech, but last October I think, I couldn't find them for someone else. I don't know if they were/are shut down due to covid, or they're permanently out of business.

I hear the stock bumpers things do a good job on simple parking lot type drops but I have no first hand knowledge . I rock alt rider bars to protect my bike from my mistakes . crashed my 2012 in Moab twice with alt rider and no damage to the bike .

I don't what that exchange rate is. I only paid $135.00 usd. But, I'm glad to see they're still around.

The stock bits do fine on pavement or smooth gravel road drops. My '12 just begged me to take it places I would never take a street bike. Then sometimes she bit me. U turn on a steep, off camber gravel road at the top of a steeeeep drop, sure, why not, plop...

The only failing of the stock guards is in soft or uneven ground on the left side. If you have a drop in sand or uneven ground on the left side you risk pushing the fan into the radiator and either jamming the fan, in which case it burns out quickly the next time it cycles on, or damaging the radiator and losing coolant. Be aware of that, and you're half saved already. Some form of minimal, but more substantial protection, like Sierra showed, and it's a non-issue.

+1
The other thing to consider is a minimal skid plate to protect both the exposed oil filter and bottom sump plate of the engine. The skid plate doesn't need to be much but the sump plate is cast aluminum and there've been people on gravel who've thrown up a stone and made a hole, losing their oil.

Thanks for that... I was looking at a simple , old school skid plate last night. I will stick with the little stock crash bar for now.

Got Givi bars on mine.

In 2014 I was knocked off the S10 by an 84 year old turning right and not seeing me. The right side of the bike hit the car at about 5mph and then she went down on the same side. Although the bars sacrificed themselves there was very little damage to the bike and I was able to ride it home.

I'm a pavement princess, but still have skid plate; Altrider. Even on the RT & ST, I bottomed the fairing. I've slid across curbs several times on the Tenere; nothing but minor scratches. I wouldn't trust it with boulders, but I don't see any of those in my future.
