Hello.
The unthinkable happened to me while touring in Botswana (Africa) a few weeks ago. I burned my ONLY key that I got with the bike! How did I do that I hear you all ask, well simple I took my key out the ignition ( I do not do this every when at camp for the night) and put the key into my tank bag. I never realized that I put it into the days rubbish and that night it rained making the campfire wood wet and hard to ignite, took out the trash and crumpled it into a ball and threw it into the half lit fire. I never felt the key in the trash and up it went in flames. The next day packed up and ready to leave, no key! Unpacked all luggage, nothing. Looked in the campfire ashes, F*ck!!! I burned the key. So what's the big deal just use the spare key, well the bike never came with a spare key! Stranded in the bush. Anyways I have managed to get rescued and had the bike salvaged and shipped back home. I have managed to source an ECU with all three keys, fuel tank lock and seat lock along with starter barrel and immobilizer from a 2010 S10 mine is a 2011 S10 that was recovered and in working condition from a guy who's bike was in a crash so going to remove my old components and install his all research i have done says it will work and should be a plug and play (start). Has anyone else done this and did you have success??

I seem to recall another forum member had little option but to do something similar a few years back, after an attempted theft wrecked the steering lock/immobiliser system.

Apart from the nuisance & time the swap will take, you should be good to go, as the S10 is from the pre-canbus era, so electronic components are not assigned to the specific bike/ECU thankfully. However, before parting with cash, make sure you are getting all the hardware as well as a complete set of three keys - 2 standard black keys that can be registered to the system & 1 red key, known as the code re-registering key which carries a transponder (not to be used when riding).

Contrary to belief it is possible to produce a new red key and a black key that will get you back up and running without having to replace the ecu, locks etc and it doesn’t cost that much either. I discovered this earlier this year after finding a new S10 to replace mine after it was written off by insurance in a dealership but it appeared not to have a red key.

Whilst they are based in Wales which is obviously nowhere near where you are, I would have thought that someone in your country could offer the same service. They were very responsive and helpful in relation to my enquiry, but ultimately I didn’t need to use them because the dealer managed to find the missing red key
