Posted in another thread re impending brake pad change. I’m also going with new tyres (AT41 ordered). I’ll take the wheels in loose and I’ll change the pads whilst the wheels are off. My question though , in anticipation of working on the bike I’ve gone over all the nuts and bolts involved today , making sure I’ve got the tools and nothing was seized. In doing so I’ve removed a hugger , drive shaft and rear brake protector (smoto stuff). My riding is predominately road , it feels like all these after market items just make service work more complicated , what do you think ? For now whilst I’m waiting on tyres I’ve left it all off.

Hey Vanny,

Regarding removing, “drive shaft and rear brake protector.”

I believe those two aftermarket parts are in place to stop your pant leg from getting stuck when mounting and dismounting the motorcycle. I could be incorrect, based on your description of the parts. This happened to me one time with the OEM parts, and I simply bent back the stock cover(s) to close the gap. 35,000 miles later, still working fine.

If you never intend on driving off road, you’re probably OK by leaving them off. I hope this helps.

U-joint protector is what you don't want to leave off. I don't know if this what you're talking about, but here's a picture. This is what keeps your pantleg from grabbing the bike.

Nope, this picture is exactly what's going to grab your pantleg sooner or later. When I first got my Tenere, I thought everybody was crazy about catching a pantleg on that thing. Then I did it twice. Part was ordered, 'cuz I knew what would happen on the third time.

TenereJourneyMan is right, they are for off road protection and really serve little to no purpose on tarmac. I would leave them off in your case.
The only thing I would change though is the original U-joint guard. I'm surprise Yamaha never changed the design of it. They have been known to trap your pant leg when coming to a stop and possibly causing the bike and rider to fall over unable to get the foot out to the ground.
The guard from Altrider as Sierra1 shows on his post fixes this possible issue.
