I have had my 16 tenere 3 months. what I am about to say maybe old news to everyone. my tenere was jerky/surging/difficult to ride at slow speeds and had excessive engine braking. I tried all the other so called cures but no help. I installed a booster plug and all the problems are gone. now it's great bike. the plug makes the ecu thinks it's 30 degree f colder. that is what it show to the instrument cluster. that makes the engine run richer curing the problem. yes you then need to add 30 degrees more to the dash temp display. mpg has not gone down. still 55 mpg. simply DIY mod. cost $159 bought from boosterplug.com came from denmark.

Tricks the computer into thinking the the intake air temperature sensor is reading 20 degrees (can't remember if it's C or F) below what it actually is, the computer in turn runs the fuel injection richer than it normally would.

Personally, for the price, I would rather a proper ECU tune for a bit more.

My gen 1 has a surge at 2000 rpm in first that is like bucking sometimes. I've tried richening my powercommnder and didn't do anything.

Interesting and thanks for your post, I’m surprised there haven’t been a bunch of folks saying your not driving correctly.
My 2013 did it and my 2018 does it a little worse, sure it’s still plenty drivable but I wish it didn’t do that, if the cost of the booster plug was more like $50 I might be willing to buy one. Seems like Yamaha is the one that should be fixing this issue but it’s been around ever since the 1200 hit the market so I think they are doing their best to simply ignore it. Since you say the booster works by letting the Tenere run a little richer maybe it’s basically a problem caused by EPA regulations .

to me

I sent booster plug an email describing my 2000 rpm surge. This is their response.

Hello John,

If your PCV is installed and mapped correctly, and it does not help to add more fuel - then the additional fuel enrichment from the BoosterPlug will not help either.

It seems that your bike have another problem that is not just the usual lean mixture issue.

It is nearly impossible to diagnose a bike by mail, but first things to check is throttle valve synchronization and TPS adjustment. And it could actually be a faulty lambda sensor in the exhaust too (A bad lambda sensor will not always flash a warning in the dashboard, and we have seen faulty lambda sensors make the bike run like you describe)

Throttle sync cured my surge. Turned the left screw out 1/4 turn and did all the good. Had a rubber cap that was not a tight fit too. Last sync I did was 24k miles ago. Slacker. The guy at booster plug was a super nice and seemed like he really know his shit about fueling and bikes in general. Will give advice that is worth listening to.

What is a throttle sync and how do you do it? In Canada the Booster Plug would be about $250 by the time you conversion and add duties and import fees. Plus not sure I would want to increase the temp by another 20 degrees, not sure what kind of long term impact that would have on the bike.

One other anomaly that I don’t think has been mentioned is that because it tricks your ECU into believing the air temperature is 20 degrees cooler, your temperature gauge will also show 20 degrees cooler too even though your engine temperature will be no different.

Having said that, having a slightly richer mixture can mean your engine temperature may be a few degrees cooler too, although not 20 degrees cooler!

the plug does not increase or decrease the engine temp. it just tricks the ecu into believing the air temp is 30 degrees f colder. which then enrichens the fuel mix solving the problem.
