How long does the fuel pump last?

I'm debating between changing the fuel pump and fuel filter. I have 2012 Super Tenere with 43000 miles. And dealing with hard start issue that progress every time.

Wondering how much fuel pump last on our bike and is it make sense to change the whole thing for like 180 of just a filter for 15 if the pump should last like 60-70K.

Share your experience :)

Just shy of 77,000 miles on my 2014, and I don't have any fuel pump issues. I expect you'll find guys with even higher mileage in here that'll say the same. You'll probably also find someone whose fuel pump failed at a lower mileage than yours, so it's always tough to know which spectrum you'll fall into.

The fuel pump/filter wouldn't be the first place I would be looking TBH. Before embarking on a hunt for the reasons behind your hard start issue, it's always a good idea to start by checking for fault/error codes. You can interrogate the system via the dash on a 2012.

Have you checked the battery condition? Voltage drop at a cold start can throw up many strange issues.

I'd be looking at the battery first. Our bikes like a good fresh kick from a healthy battery to start easily. Fuel pump failures are pretty rarely reported here, especially at such low mileage as yours.

I did change the battery and spark plugs and air filter. The only thing left is fuel and chain tensioner (i got a recommendation to change it on this forum as well).
In terms of errors, I have 19 on the dashboard quite often. I just checked here https://www.motorcycleforums.net/threads/yamaha-fault-codes-list.55221/

"19 - error on the incoming signal from the ECU (short circuit or disconnected sensor side footboard) - - self diagnosed line D: 20; "

Can it be my problem and how do I fix it if so?

If you are having a hard start [because code 19 is showing] it will not start when code 19 is on the dash.
Try spraying out the ignition switch with contact cleaner and compressed air, then lube the ignition switch.

The fuel pump filter is not mentioned in the Yam service schedule but a dirty filter caused a 3K misfire when I was on tour in Norway.

I think if you clean your filter on a regular basis you should be alright and I have mine cleaned every 12k service I've kept the same tank on 3 S10s (long story) so the pump has now covered about 74k

Details here:-

Ive worked on many that have 100K - 150K miles - even higher... No problem with fuel filter. As several of the guys have said, I would start looking at other things first. (the things others have said to check)

I'll try that. Do you know what error 19 means in my case?

Like literally disassemble ignition button, red one, and clean it and lube it?

I haven't mentioned but after an hour fighting with it. Basically trying to start I managed to start it and made it back home. If that gives a clue as well.

Not the starter button, Put the straw of the contact cleaner in where the key goes into the ignition switch and spray it good then blow it out with the air hose then spray some lube in where the key goes. Code 19 is a generic code when it will not let the bike start.

Just did that.

But what it does now it starts from the second time but then shutting down 10-20 seconds after.

P.S. Awesoem trip to Alaska btw :)

It looks like it worked. Thank you so much for sharing :) I test it just for one day. Will see what will happen during the week.

So the actually problem was a immobiliser?
Also - since you did so many miles on your bike should I care about chain tentioner and if not when should I change it?

At your mileage with a Gen1 bike and original CCT, I’d be looking to upgrade it with the current Yamaha version or a manual CCT soon, not urgent, but soon. Both are fine and do the job they’re intended to do well. Just choose one or the other.

When code 19 is showing on the dash reach down to the wire bundle at the bottom of the ignition switch and give the harness a wiggle. Often the 19 will go out and the bike will start. I've got a new switch assembly in my to-do box for the next time the issue arises. The last time I went through the issue code 19 showed up maybe a dozen times, a couple times with a stall after starting normally. Each time a wiggle cleared the problem. It hasn't done it again for several months now. And a good cleaning of the internals with electrical contact cleaner is a real good idea.
