how is wind protection?

Guys, I have been following this threat with interest and in silence. My question is what exactely is buffeting and how does it relate to wind noise. I expect that if you do the naked bike riding, then wind noise will be an issue since you will hear a lot of noise from your helmet. My experience is also that certain helmets are more noisy and do feed back more wind noise to the rider. If you have a reasonable screen on the bike, such as the stock screen, then the screen may also generate some noise from being in the wind, and the rider will hear that through his good or not so good helmet. In this case the screen is the source of the noise as you ride and your helmet may or may not block off a significant portion of the wind.

On the other hand, I always understood buffeting as that effect that wind/airflow have on the riders helmet that causes your head to be knoked/pushed around during the ride as if the airstream pushed ones head from the back and sides. (Excuse my lack of adequate description). For instance on my old bike I used to have this problem that when I have a pillion on, often the wind/airstream/bufetting caused our helemts to sometimes knock against one another as we rode, though the screen afforded good wind protection. Since I have the S10 I have not experienced that at all in the past 2500kms! Since in my mind buffetting is not a problem with the stock screen, though I would like a larger screen for more wind protection and less wind noise and therefore I expect a larger screen to be quieter and to allow me to drive long distances with minimal wind noise, minimal or no wind force against the helmet and body and no buffetting.

Do I make sense or do I have it all wrong here? "I am getting lazy, want to ride in luxury, quiteness and relaxed on the long road that I plan for December holidays, about 2600km trip"

Ah ha! I think we're getting into the proverbial 'Rocket Science' scenario right here. ;) This subject is not an easy one to contend with .... just too many variables to contend with. The way the bike sits on the road, the height and width of the rider, the bikes speed, weather conditions, the screen, the helmet yah d'yah d'ya ....

It's all about laminar airflow. Smooth airflow equates to low noise reduced buffeting and, best of all, increased speed. Turbulent airflow is your enemy. I sit nicely behind the standard screen and do not experience any adverse buffeting. Noise is a differnt matter ..... if I wear an Arai Corsair, Astro R or Viper the noise levels are more pronounced. The Corsair (most expensive) is the worst. If I wear my Tour X3 or Shark Evoline II .... absolutely fine.

I've not tried this on the Tenere but with the FJR if I ride (at speed) with the top box on the turbulence is very noticeable .... stick a pillion on, i.e., fill the gap, the turbulence diminishes. Take the box off ... airflow improves noise goes away.

Hi guys.
I was one of the first owners of the S10 in Aus and very quickly tired from the buffeting of the original screen.
I bought the Yamaha high screen and tried that a few times and actually found it worse than the smaller screen for buffeting, and I'm talking buffeting until my nose itches and sight blurrs.
I was originally very happy with the CalSci touring screen but found that as soon as I fitted the MotorradWorks 1" suspension risers: http://www.motorradgarage.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=106_247&products_id=1160 The tail was lifted just enough to start the buffeting again.
I have since released the MotorradWorks adjustable screen kit: http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=199.0 and it is the only thing that has been able to truely offer a buffeting free ride, even with using the standard low screen..

Seems to be an individual issue and very much dependant on height as well as other factors. I am 5'11' and I have the saddle in the low position. I found the buffeting from the stock screen to be a bit+ annoying, but no where near as bad as my old DL650 with stock setup. More so the wind noise was very high. The latter may be related to the vent arrangement on my helmet which stand proud of the helmet. So, I invested in the Yamaha tall screen. Having tested this in the middle and "high" locations I settled on the middle location. The end result is almost no buffeting at all, but still a decent amount of air striking the upper part of my helmet. This air flow turned out to have a beneficial vacuum effect, sucking air out of top of my helmet drawing air up through the helmet. This meant I could drive with my visor closed at temps below 2C with no fogging. End result: Perfect for me. One week later I received my side wind deflectors and it is hard to say if they made any difference in my mind, but I like the look. Possible that they caused some buffeting to return, but really hard to say. The end result is that I feel that I can easily live without an adjustable windshield mount, however that Motorrad Works bracket looks kind of cool on the bike ;)

RE adjustable screen mount.

I am interested in that as I currnetlymride a ST1300/Pan European withnthenadjustable screen. Before I bought that bike I was hard pressed to see the advantage of an adjustablemscreen. Five years later, I am not sure I want to be without that option! it isnreal nicemto be able to adjust the green to suit weather conditions. I will buy Greg's set up so I can have that flexibility on my S10.
