how is wind protection?

Curious as to how "quiet" this bike is, and the differences in the standard and tall windscreen, deflectors, etc.
I am 6'1" with 34" inseam, and have a particular aversion to helmet buffeting...

I am on a BMW now, R1200GS with the "barn door" Aeroflow screen, and have to say it is excellent.
Unfortunately, that is one of the few things I DO like about it ::)

On the fence about the S10, what with having to buy it sight unseen (and wait forever) but I'm thinking seriously
about it (one too many leaking seals  ) My only real concern is the windscreen. Anyone?

Hi and welcome to the forum,

This was one of my concerns before I test rode the bike, I am 5' 10 and found the standard screen to be reasonable, after market screen are already available and the choice is growing every few weeks. The standard screen can also be adjusted, your best bet is going to be find who is roughly the same dimensions as yourself and see how they find it. Certainly has not put me of buying one.

Swagger has clocked up a few miles on his Super Ten so could also give you some solid feedback.

Hope that helps :)

Re wind protection
I am a petite 6ft 6in and have 2000kms on my s10. I have the standard screen and will be ordering the
higher version as find the buffeting becomes an issue at anything over 110kph or 70mph for those still in the dark ages.

Hi, I am 6'I" and I ordered my ST with the bigger screen supplied by Yamaha. I have ridden it in all sorts of conditions now and up to 220 km/h and I find that the screen offers great protection, but you get quite a bit of wind noise especially riding into the wind. I have got it on the highest setting and there is no wind buffeting what so ever. It might be advisable though to check out some aftermarket screens before buying the optional one from Yamaha.

I can't offer much on this subject as I've not reached the 5'-10" mark yet and I suspect that I'm not likely to now ;D

I'm very used to the lack of outright comfort as I tend toward naked bikes for the most part anyway ..... and a bit of buffeting comes with the territory. That said I sit in the right slot with the XT1200Z and find the standard screen to my liking. Don't think I'd like those deflector thingy's neither .... look very much an afterthought :)

Thanks for the replies fellows. Sounds like the Calsci touring model screen could satisfy my "wants"
Now to work on getting off the fence...

the screen may be one thing, but today upon sitting on the Super Ten, i noticed it has more side panel leg protection than my Honda ST1300 had. Simply Amazing!!!

I second that, I test rode a few venture bikes and that was one of the first things I noticed when I at on it, always a plus.

Well, since we are talking :)

I'm pleased to hear that on the leg coverage. That was another concern of mine. I only have the GS, not the GSA,
but am running Aeroflow "lowers" and have gotten really, really used to having that wind blocked off my legs.
Especially now with it getting cooler.

What makes me scratch my head is - ALL my previous bikes have been naked models...
Never thought I'd want to be out of the wind,
but once I got used to the blissful pocket of calm air, I'm reluctant to give it up, hence my first question.

Also realized today, that after all the bikes I've owned before, if I buy this one, it will be my first water-cooled ???
Not sure I'm digging the thoughts of an electric fan, especially where this one is mounted.
But then again, I'm not digging the thoughts of my out-of-warranty beemers ticking time bomb
final drive and brake servo system poised to self-destruct either.
I'm about ready to flip a coin or something, can't make up my mind!

Jwhite,

I have come from HONDA and really like em!! THis thing is going to spank alot of rides out there. I was talking to my dad today who has an FJR. I think this Super Ten will be a better all around bike than any sport-tourer especially for someone who doesn't like to lean over on a bike as my dad hates on his FJR.
The shaft, ABS and Traction Control are big plusses for me on this bike. After sitting on it today, I am eagerly waiting its arrival.

New here. I love this bike concept but I've been smitten before and disappointed. I'm very interested in the wind protection question.

Started riding again in 2002. Bought a naked SV650 with a Givi screen. Wind hits my helmet, which causes noise but no helmet buffeting. Ear plugs solve the noise problem. Tried the bike without the Givi and prefer riding with it because it keeps a lot of wind off me. Bought a 2004 Vstrom (DL1000). Read many posts about helmet buffeting but ignored them. The Vstrom had terrible helmet buffeting - actually caused my vision to blur. I adjusted the stock screen. I tried different mounting spacers per some forum suggestions. I bought a 3rd party screen that was supposed to be good. Nothing eliminated the helmet buffeting, so I reluctantly sold the bike.

The Tenere looks a lot like the Vstrom at front end, so I'm worried about possible helmet buffeting. Anyone with some insight on this issue? Would love to hear from you.

Abreuma,

Did you ever use the Madstad adjustable windshield bracket? It did wonders to the beffeting and you could adjust it so the air was around you. I have an 07 DL1000 and it is on the way out!!! I really want the ABS part of it, and the shaft drive is another bonus i am used to coming off of Honda ST1300.

GO for it!!!

That bracket wasn't available when I owned the Vstrom. Would have helped I'm sure.

From the brief Cycle World article I read I assumed the Tenere was already in Europe. If that's true I was hoping to find someone who could speak to the helmet buffeting issue.

It is and I have one. It depends on your height relative to the screen. I sit in the sweet spot and do not suffer any buffeting. I also wear an Arai Tour X .... a motocross/enduro style lid with a peak. No problem at all. ;D

I did not encounter any helmet buffeting issues on my ride, wearing a shoei raid 2 and I'm 5'10, standard screen, if that helps any

I have a V-Strom right now and the screen and buffeting was a huge issue on that bike until I got a Madstad and MP screen. Then all was fine. I am 5'9" so I will sit lower.
One point about the Madstad, the increase airflow behind the screen really is the key to smoother air transition at top of the screen. I played around with adding spacers on the mount screws to shift the screen further out at the bottom on the Strom. This also helped a lot.

Has anyone that has an S10 tried this? Start with about a .75" to 1" spacer to shift the bottom of the screen forward.
