I’m the owner. I loved and miss that bike. Ask away.
Jeepin, thanks for chiming in and thanks for trading in your ST.

The crew here on the forum has been incredibly helpful with my decision, and they did it on short notice. It’s awesome to see you’re a member here - builds the case for a well looked after bike.

I am curious if you had ever had the valve service done in the 61k? They didn’t have record of it... Also, I saw from your old posts that you transferred all your accessories over to the new ST - if you have anything you’re not using (or recommend), I’m definitely in the market.

Motorsports Nation has completed the valve service, and I’m waiting on them to get the reg sorted out... should be getting the bike early next week.

Aqcon:

I am fairly new to this Forum, though I have lurked here for a while, and I stumbled in tonight to find your query about buying a used, high mileage Super Tenere. I'm late to the show and realize that you have already purchased the bike however I just wanted to chime in to let you know that you have purchased a GREAT bike and have nothing to worry about.

I have a 2013 Super Tenere and I'm guessing that this would be a "Gen1" machine. I have owned the bike since new and it currently has almost 178,000km (110,604 miles) on the odometer. It would have even more kilometers on it however last year I bought a second bike, on which I put 20,400km, so I only put about 14,000km on the Super Tenere last year. I have completed 3 Iron Butt rides with it and it is no stranger to gravel roads and some mud.

Summarizing a few details of my bike for you: original brake rotors, FD has leaked three times requiring rebuilds, regular valve checks have always found one or two exhaust valves to be tight, rear shock leaked (not rebuildable) and was replaced with an OEM shock, 16 rear and 10 front tires (original Metzlers, 2 sets of Mitas E07, and the rest were Heidenau K60's, Yamalube 10W40 and Yamaha filters and the motor does not burn oil, spoke failure in the rear wheel - make sure you check them every so often and re-torque them (6Nm), Jesse Bags 10" saddlebags (didn't buy the OEM bags as they looked pretty flimsy), AltRider rear luggage bracket, AltRider crash bars, AltRider stump pan, Fenda Extenda on the front fender.

I have added several other bits and pieces but I don't want to bore you, however one add-on I highly recommend are the Yamaha winglets that attach to the fairing on either side of the windshield. They are well worth the outrageous Yamaha asking price.

You have purchased a fine motorcycle. Enjoy.

Haynes
Haynes, that’s some grade-A feedback. Helps reassure me, but more importantly it helps the next guy looking for the same.
I’ll check out the winglets.

Hi Sir, my Avatar is your bike in Canada! That 2017 was my 12th bike and the best one Iv'e ever owned by far. Zero trouble with it, unlike my '19. As I think you now know, the valves were checked by Auburn Motorsports at about 40k. They were in spec and was told I'd probably never have to check them again. Of course that's just one mechanics opinion and you should do what you think is best. I did receive a recall notice for the '17 for the front brake switch but never had a problem with it.

I have some very strong opinions on accessories. After 2 decades of riding I know exactly what I like and what I don't. You're welcome to PM me about specifics or pictures. Stay clear of the yamaha factory hard bags, junk. I have the Givi Trekker aluminum panniers and they are fantastic. I even use them as a table and chair on occasion. The best accessory I have is a set of Rigid (lifetime warranty)(denali mount) flood lights, turns night into day. Wire them to your high beam switch. Might still be a lead left behind in there for you. I also love the altrider crash bars too. I also have a medium Vstream windshield, tall is too big. A $99 basic givi nuvi serves me well and at that price I don't worry about theft.

That '17 was never beaten on at all, just I rode it and never crazy. I had it since new. I wish you the best of luck with it. The day before I sold it I had no intention of getting rid of it, i just ran into what I though was a good deal to upgrade and did so on an impulse. I wasn't out looking to sell her. I did have plans to run her to 100k then 200k.

I really don’t feel she needs rotors yet. I think you can do those at 100k. The bike is only 3. I guess I’d flush the coolant and check the color of the brake fluid. Change if not clear. So coming straight off that bike to my 19 I could barely tell a difference in ride quality and braking. If it were me I’d wait til the front seals started leaking and then do the front seals and oil together. I wouldn’t touch the rear shock. Not sure if you can even service that shock. These bikes require very little maintenance. They just love a lot of miles. Oil is good to 65,000, done at 60k. I change it every 5000 with amsoil fully synthetic. My fav oil by far.

Awesome. Motorsports Nation did a OC when they did the valve adjustment. Waiting on him to send down the YES paperwork and the plates, when he’ll be providing the valve job report. Thanks for the statuses, more peace of mind.

Easy to check, rear spec is 4.5mm min. Fronts are 4.0mm. If you don't have a micrometer, get one at HF or online. It's a good investment.

60K miles isn't high mileage. It's more than some but not an extreme number. I ride around 50-60K a year. My 2014 quit running due to lack of compression at 199,003. I bought a 2016 used this January and swapped everything over to it. I'll perform a teardown on the 2014 one day.
You shouldn't have any issues with a 60K Tenere.

Just to add, when the bike was first out, someone put 60K miles on a 2012, it was torn down, and tolerances were measured. It was still within production tolerances. That is pretty impressive. There is a YouTube of the breakdown.
