I started working on the high front guard to suit my larger front wheel over the last couple of days ::013::

Im happy enough with it at the moment but I still have another couple of guards coming to hopefully achieve the "just right" look that I am after.
Ideally I would like it just an inch longer and have it sit an inch higher at the bottom triple clamp plate.
The difficulty is the width/height of the guard on about the same plane as the forward peak of the faring (just below the 3 lights).
This set up just clears the faring at full turn, and the tail of the guard is the same.
I'm sure I will find the guard that I want, it just means buying/trying a shitload of them before I come across the right one. ???

Im not sure at this stage if the guard can be installed with crash bars in place but that doesnt bother me too much at the moment as I may end up designing my own version at a later date.
Happy enough to run without bars for the time being.

Once the guard has been selected, I will move onto the brake lines/routing and then the fork leg guards.

Anyway - I'm loving the look so far, and it will only get better.

Brake line routing is the next big headscratch..

I think I have exactly that guard in "stock" - Acerbis Supermoto? I bought it to try on the Strom but never got around to figuring it out...

Can't see myself fitting to the S10 - anyone want the guard? yours for the cost of shipping.

Thats one of the ones I am waiting for Trevor.
No body stocks them in Perth so I had to get one sent over from the importer in the east.
Also waiting on the Acerbis Supermoto EVO. Bit of an odd one that, but it may work.

Another one I want to try is the Polisport SMline but that will have to come from EU as they are not even stocked in AUS.

It looks a bit small for the bike size, dont you think?
What about this project?

Or rally fender like this?

That was going to be a fixed beak as it would obviously not have room to move inside of the bodywork at that point.

I was unsure about the acceptance of such a large beak fixed in place, but personally I to find it nicer looking than the lower guard.

As I said, im still looking for the right guard, but any unit fitted to be able to turn with the front wheel will have to be mounted considerably lower that the one above.

I was pretty keen to see/feel how the high guard is on the bike and if the obstruction has any impact on air coming up through the steering column hole.

So, along with my MacGyvered ABS sensor mount I decided to MacGyver the brake lines into position to allow full wheel articulation.
Once I have had a chance to play with this I will re-fit the dual disc 21" wheel and add the second set of lines.

I'm liking the look so far but will be better when I locate the right mudguard and fit the fork protectors.

Looks good. I've been admiring your bikes transformation since the first time you posted pictures - right after you brought it home. I found a folder the other day with your original photo's tucked inside. Your photo's and reviews were part of the reason I bought mine - Thanks for that & keep up the great work. ::012:: Mike

More front guard development

Still playing with different front guards.
Having had the Polisport Supermoto installed, it gave me a pretty good idea of what style and direction I wanted to head in. More importantly though, it gave me a sample guard that I could take in-hand around the different bike shops and hold up against the multitude of differing shaped guards.
I found a Suzuki one and I felt really sure it would do the job, so I borrowed the guard off a fellow inmate (lives down in the smoke) and stuck it on temporarily tonight.

Long story short - I have found my new front guard. ::015::
I'm love'n the look and will set about laser cutting and pressing a new mount for it.
I think I will even include a top alloy stiffener strap for that old time custom nostalgia touch.

There is still a big job ahead designing the fork leg protectors to look and function right, and to layout the brake lines just right, but I think this is such a worthwhile project. I recon this is exactly how Yamaha should have offered this bike. It just gives so much more protection from sand/dirt/mud/wind flying up the steering column hole.
I will be able to get out for a ride tomorrow so i'm really looking forward to feeling how it works.

I'll get some pics from further away tomorrow when I am out in the field.

I have been hanging out to do this mod for a long time - and i'm really enjoying it.. ::013::

Wasp,

I really like the Suzuki front fender on your bike. You are going to leave the Suzuki "S" on aren't you? :)

Now that the single disk has been on a while how you finding it?
Honestly, I have been tempted to cut the right hand disc caliper lug off the fork leg and sand it down like it was never there, but I also like the balanced look fo twin disc's.
I do really like the lightweight feel of the missing disc and caliper (and it can very much be felt in handling and suspension action) but I fear that the next buyer may not appreciate that.
Im hoping that Yamaha will come out with a hardcore 900+ ADV bike and I will sell this for that.
I would change the master cylinder to a smaller unit if it was to stay this way as that would make for a little less effort on the lever. That said, the brakes are still very good and will still initiate ABS with a good squeeze. It must be remembered that I use shorty levers as well. I can only get two fingers on the levers....

Todays test ride and outdoor pics....

I have finally found the correct front guard for my liking.
After buying four aftermarket guards, then trialing the best fit up against every new bike on the showroom floors >:D I have settled on what you see below.

I much prefer the look of this compared to the shorter unit I had on only a few days ago.

To me, this fits/looks/feels like a factory fitted unit and I think this is how they should have been from the factory, although I might do a slight angle trim to the front in keeping with the angular modern look of the bike.

Even though this is only temporarily mounted, it is a super strong and rigid install so I went for a 180km ride today to test it out.

WOW....
What a difference. ::015::

Gone is any debris and sand etc flying up through the steering stem/faring hole... 8)

Gone is any form of wind buffeting. I actually rode with the screen on std/low today (as shown) and with my Aria Corsair (noisy helmet) (as shown) so I could get the best feedback from effects, and I can tell you, the wind noise is quieter (I can hear the engine and front tire now) and I witnessed no/nil/nadda/zip/zilch/f#@kall effects of buffeting up to 160km/hr (allegedly >:D). In fact I had the visor open the whole day.

The high guard in combination with the 21" front wheel is really making my underpants happy.

The bike now feels so Honda XR600ish crossed with Ducati litre+ sports bike that it is freaky. It has maintained all of its agility on road but with a more "solid" feel in corners and straight lines. It's not put off by grooves and bumps in the road (not that that was a huge problem) and responds more readily to body english than it did with the 19" wheel. The bike is so different now that it just feels more tuned and in tune with my way of riding and what I expect from this type of machine. This machine is starting to really feel CONNECTED TO ME...!

I have an 18" rear coming from Woody over the coming couple of weeks and I am sooo looking forward to that. I feel that will be the icing on the cake and convert this into the Super Tenere that Yamaha should have made.

More to come when I get a full day (200kms) of forest riding in on the weekend after next

AHEM! I understand the enthusiasm and all, but 'should have made' for whom? ;) I understand this is nirvana for you long-legged critters, but my 31" inseam is perfectly content with the 19/17" combo, thank you! (insert favorite short person joke here) ;D That said, you've really done some brilliant work here and I'm glad the bike becomes more suitable to you (and other Megatron-sized riders) with each step 8) That really is a great looking bike! It's the only high-fender mod that I actually like the looks of..not much of a 'beak' man myself.
