Hi,

I'm Tim and I live in the UK and have been an S10 fan since watching Stephane Peterhansel stuff everyone silly in the Paris/Dakar. I currently own and ride daily a 1990 XTZ750 and have recently had the good fortune to test ride the new S10 and will be buying one in the very near future. I'm 51 years young and have been looking to purchase a new Adventure bike and I had a shorltist of 3, the KTM 990 Adventure R, the BMW GSA and the new S10. The BMW was dismissed very easily as I'm mentally too young to be a BMW rider and they have reliability issues. The KTM is a seriously quick and fun hooligan machine but they aren't without their problems either (snatchy throttle, poor electrics, crap battery etc. etc.) and the wife didn't like it and thought I looked silly on it (I'm a 6'3" ex rugby player of very big build) she did however like the new S10 and thought it looked about the right size for a big bloke like me.

I borrowed a 2010 first edition from my local dealer last weekend and despite bloody awful weather took the beast for a thorough shakedown on a mixture of fast A roads and smaller twisty B roads ( I live in Devon and we have some of the best twisties in the country with stunning sea views) and my opinion at the end of the ride was what a great bike and I need one of these in my garage.

Hope to get to know more of you in time, I'm already a keen active member on both the Super-tenere.net and carpe TDM forums

Tim

Hi Rem,

It's kind of complicated, I lost my mum recently and am waiting for the dreaded tax man (IRS) to declare probate at which point in time they release my inheritance. it could be 3 weeks it could be 6 weeks who knows, hopefully it will be soon as my local dealer has 2 first editions (one silver and one blue) waiting to go and the blue one has my name on it. I can't believe you guys across the pond are still waiting for your bikes to be delivered when we've had them for nearly a year.

First off, my condolences.

Regarding the Tax Man, understood. You can't rush those boys. But at least it sounds like it's a done deal whenever it happens.

Yes, we have been jealously drooling over you guys for some time now. It looks like it's about to happen here. I sure hope so sooner rather than later. Where I am, the riding season is pretty well over by early September.

Keep us posted. R

Understood, it probably gets a wee bit chilly up there after September, spent many weeks in Canada (mostly Ontario) on business and have been there both summer and winter and know just how cold it gets in winter. Makes me shiver just thinking about the windchill. The plus points are Stunning scenery and some lovely smooth roads.

Raining here today, but just came off of two good weeks.

Well, I have a doc's appointment in a bit ... annual physical for the old guy. Again, welcome aboard. We will be anxious to see the new bike, and how well it supports your substantial frame. I think you picked the right one. You could call it the Super Timere. R

Hi Tim

welcome to the forum. Not been here long myself, but they seem a friendly crowd.
Just taken possession of a silver S10 myself. I wanted a blue one but the deal I got off the shop swung the purchase.
I too had a 750 S10 but to be honest I didn't gel with it and it was sold within two weeks. I like my Yamaha twins however and have had a 850 and 900 TDM.
If you ever get ooop north It would be good to see you.
Perhaps when we reach a critical mass in the UK we could organise a get together.

All the best

BigDave

Thanks for the greetings everyone.

Dave

We haven't met but because of Carpe I feel like I know you anyway. I sold my TDM 850 last year and kept my XTZ because they are slightly rarer and I don't like to ride bikes that everyone and their mother rides (like a 1200GSA) and because it's physically bigger for a big guy to ride. The silver bike looks great, my wife prefers the silver but I would like a blue one if possible although the white with the yamaha speedblocks is good especially with the additional tank decals set that Wasp sells.

How are you finding the new bike? I'd be interested in your thoughts to see if they agree with mine, initially I was a little underwhelmed really as I was expecting a lot more grunt from a 1200 because my 750 is like a tractor and I thought this would be the same but in fact it's more like the TDM in the fact it likes to rev and you need to play the gears. However after the first couple of hours I got more used to it and the roads had dried sufficiently for a bit more exuberant use of the throttle and I have to say my opinion changed as it goes where it's pointed and feels so secure and planted on the road, the braking system is superb, it effortlessly cruised along the main A roads at 80 MPH with no wobbles or drama and although the screen and suspension weren't set up for me there was no buffeting it was so easy to ride along and then look at the speedo to discover you were nearly doing 100 MPH. For such a physically big bike it just doesn't feel heavy atall once the wheels are turning and I reckon it will surprise a few of the sportsbike boys on the twisties as it handles so well. The seat was pretty comfortable but it will take time for me to get used to having a split drive/passenger seat as I've got used to slding my weight forward and backwards and shifting my position slightly to combat the numb butt syndrome, I was just starting to get aware of the the saddle after about 3 hours but as that would probably conicide with a fuel/fag break it shouldn't be a problem. The only thing I will change is the exhaust because the standard can is too quiet and pretty fugly really. and I do subscribe to the loud pipes save lives theory.

A UK gathering would be a great idea.

Tim

Welcome bigtim the guys on this side of the pond might take it the wrong way when you are talking about your fag break it’s a smoke break on this side. I am originally from the north east coast Newcastle emigrated in 1972 at the age of 14 still holding on to my Geordie accent. SUPPOSED to get my s10 in July.

I have a bunch of cousins in the UK. I visited many years ago in my youth, of course I wasn't as refined as I am today :D. I almost beat him up. I thought he was calling me a fag, he was actually offereing me a smoke.

As you can imagine, I learned a whole bunch of good words after that ;)

I forgot there were certain words we use over here which have a totally different meaning with you guys over the water, I should have remembered as I have a very good friend in Indiana who reminds me often enough about my English expressions. We are obviously 2 great nations divided by a common language. I'll try and be more american in my posts so I don't give anyone the wrong idea, just don't expect me to be politically correct as I never have done nor ever will do PC.

Limey, I'm impressed you've managed to retain your Geordie accent although I've managed to retain my Northern accent despite living down south with all the soft southern shandy drinkers for too many years. I bet you had a great time with your accent growing up in the US because whenever I've visited the US I've never had a problem meeting lovely people who "Loved my accent". I hope to try and get over to the US more often in the future to see lots more of it and possibly meet some of the like minded people on here.
