Why did you sell it?
Hi Tenman,

Sold it as two up it was woefull, understeered horribly, bought it as its a 'Tourer' thinking it would be great two up for weekends away.

No matter how much adjustment i did with the susupension the front end was just too light, couldnt get enough weight over the front
and no feeling. I joined up on a Versys forum and found even after a Nitron/Ohlins/ Wilburs etc out back and the front resprung and valved
people only had marginal success trying to sort out the handling, i wasnt prepared to throw good money at something with limited results.

The Versys has pre load adjustment up front and re bound only on the rhs fork and no compression.
The rear pre load and re-bound and no compression with a weak/soft spring as well.
I even raised the forks thru the triples 10mm.

As a 1 up bike it was pretty good and i could make it work ok.

Welcome from Texas. If you go from two-up to solo frequently, I would recommend an ES (which would necessitate a Gen II). Being able to adjust rebound/compression on the fly is greatness. And, you can set preload without even getting off of the bike; you do have to be at a stop though. I'm 300lb, and even with my wife riding passenger, the bike handles very well. Many guys here have switched out the OE springs, but I don't see the need.

Welcome Cantab, from Gold Coast Australia.

RE My thoughts on the 2 up issue with the Versys.....would depend on the ratio of solo to 2 up but I wonder if raising the ride height and putting a heavier spring in the rear would have helped? I did that to a Suzuki Bandit 1200 a few years ago and that made a huge difference. I actually ended up buying a 2nd hand Hayabusa shock as it bolted straight in and had a heavier spring as standard.

Hey there S10Aus - loved taking our kids to the GC and theme parks when they were young.

Id ran out of adjustment on the V1k for two up and even raised forks 10mm up thru the triples to get more over the front.

People had fitted an after market shock that were sprung specific + re-valved front end with so so results, i hadnt too much of problem spending some $ on a bike set up, eg on my BKing a Nitron NTR3 out back and a re-valve and springs up front = riding nirvana :) Spending that same coin on the V1K and still only getting an average ride - nope not for me, I, cut my loses and moved on.

Good result with the Busa shock on the Bandit tho ;) I couldnt find any info whether a similar year Z1000 rear shock would bolt up as an alternative o the V1K..

Cheers Cantab

Greetings from northern Missouri, USA, Cantab. Got a cousin in New York, USA, that married a lovely lady from Christchurch, NZ. Going to NZ is on our bucket list, and getting to ride there would be just about heaven.

Hey! Didn't see you'd posted a thread. Welcome, again, to the site~

Good luck on your search for a Tenere. I would second Sierra1's recommendation on getting the "ES" model if you can -- it makes it easy to adjust the suspension for 1-up or 2-up riding, as it has preset modes for each. I've used that feature a lot, as I go back and forth between 1-up and 2-up.

I'm currently looking for some brackets to lower the rear passenger footpegs, and either a standalone backrest or topcase w/ backrest to make my girlfriend a little more comfortable -- she's 5'8" and needs a little more leg room -- but she otherwise finds the Tenere very comfortable and fun to ride on.

All good mate and thanks :)

I hear ya's reguarding the 'ES' and thanks for sharing your experience about 2 up riding - nice.

My wife is a similar height and found the leg room better than the 18 Versys we just sold, if she wants lower pegs thats fine by me, id done the same for her when we had a Suzuki BKing and a couple of other things.

We are in day6 of a 4wk lockdown in NZ so all bike shops are closed and our equivalent of EBay in NZ is Trade Me , there is only 1 listing for a 1200 Tenere and its about NZ $26k around US $15,500 out of my price range + its a fly n ride (which im more than happy with) ive scoured tons of bike shops hopeless websites foe a used one to no avail
Another small problem exists that is of course after 4wks (minimum i reckon) of lockdown will i have employment still

Anyway cheers again for the welcome Alexander
