I added this in another post, Ive been asked to bring this to its own thread. Hopefully this might help some folks. *****Service lower linkage on swing arm******


After reading this post,(other original post) and having extra time on my hands, I realized I should probably re service mine again.(lower rear linkage on swing arm) I forgot that three bolts come right out in five minutes, but the 4th bolt can’t slide out easily because the exhaust pipe is in the way. It’s always a drag knowing 95% of the job is done correctly but not the entire job.
So I decided to do the whole thing, pulled the skid plate, pulled the Arrow headers, and then was able to pull the 4th bolt out and service that bolt/bearing.

Here is the best part, if you put that bolt back in ‘backwards’ you will be able to pull this bolt out now to the right side, and the nut will now be on the exhaust side. I will be able to service all four bolts very easy and quickly now. WOW, how freaking nice !!!!

*****Next time you have your headers off, make sure to flip this bolt around backwards for future maintenance, even if your not servicing your suspension that moment ! SO helpful !

Thanks for this, I've just put mine back together doing the same, the suspension bearings were in good order but now I can check them once a year without having to remove pannier rack, exhaust etc

Thanks for the tip, and for taking the time to post photos. I'm doing this today too, just as preventative maintenance.

Are the stock exhaust primary gaskets reusable, by chance?

That is freaking brilliant! I have to do mine this year so will Tag your post. Thanks for the CLEAR pictures and more importantly, the shop manual diagram that specifically shows the bolt and configuration.

I was going to suggest cut the bolt off behind the head with whatever means, a cutoff wheel or the like so the bolt can be removed and simply replace the bolt installed backwards to eliminate the need to fool with the exhaust, but for some reason Yamaha does not offer this bolt as a part available to buy. Strange. Looks like a 14mm bolt, just like the other two, but something different I guess.

Guess I am being stupid, but from the pictures, it looks like the nut for that bolt is welded to the frame tag, so how can insert the bolt in the other direction? Surely the welded nut will prevent the bolt from going in? What am I missing?

It’s not a welded nut, it’s a tab washer welded to the frame with the tab already bent to prevent the bolt from turning. So, if you install the bolt backwards the nut will then engage the tab and not turn while tightening the bolt.

bloody hell bolt 13 in the UK is £41 and bolt 15 is £46

can i ask what so special about these bolts don,t shoot me if its a dumb question

Probably some specialized hardened bolt... :D Technically, I have no idea......

I didnt want to cut up a perfectly good bolt, I just took it as an opportunity to do normal maintenance and inspection of other parts (muffler, headers, skid plate) and then turned the bolt around backwards. Good thing I did, "im a pot calling a kettle black", I found a few bolts that were not up to TQ spec. I also took the opportunity to check out the bottom of the oil sump, nuts attaching the headers, the header flange is ALWAYS good to take a peek at, Etc. Only speaking about myself, makes me feel better knowing other stuff is checked out and looked at periodically. Also a good idea to check the water pump seal between the motor and pump from the bottom. Also the hose coming out of the water pump. I can't see any of this location with the skid plate on. Make sure its not weeping or leaking. (I've seen this in the past, turned into a water pump replacement on customers bike). Just a normal look around. IM OCD o_O..........

Ive worked on so many Super Tenere motorcycles, Ive seen a bunch of funky stuff.




For the folks that honestly don't know, If you would like to do any of this, its quite easy for most folks with few tools. If you have a stock bike you're looking at 10 nuts and bolts. And if you have any questions or need any help or guidance feel free to PM me anytime. I'll be happy to help.

is that bolt in place in the picture that's been turned is it 15 on the diagram or is it one of the 13

Had a similar problem like this with my ST1300. The lower shock bolt came out from the right, but the foot pegs/brake lever/muffler hanger plate blocked it coming out far enough to free the shock. There was a lot of disassembly needed to get that bolt out and everything had hydraulic lines, levers and electronics connected to it. From the left side it was wide open, so same solution (except in reverse), I just put the bolt in from the left instead of the right and didn't have to touch that hanger plate again. Probably rode the bike another 100,000 miles like that without issue.
