My wife and I will be in Fredericksburg next weekend with a group of friends. They'll all be on street-only bikes and we'll be doing a lot of touring on paved back roads. However I'd like to plan a day ride for her and I that's off the beaten path. I'd like dirt roads but nothing too technical since there's 2 of us on the bike.

Any suggestions?

The forest service roads off of the Blue Ridge Parkway could be fun. I love making a day trip to the mountains. Beautiful this time of year and great roads. I'm taking my fz-09 up on Tues.

Drive 35 miles north to Llano. There is a group there that weekend and you can find a full spectrum of rides to pick from. I'll be in Romney, WV otherwise I would be there. Here's a link.

I got a book this week that was written by a fellow adv rider. Covers all those areas and the hill country. I will also be there next weekend. Be happy to copy a few markers for your gps . Hopefully we can meet. Another inmate , Carrot will be there too.

I think I have the same guy's book about Big Bend, another area I've yet to make it to.

I've got the Butler's Map for the area. It shows a few promising roads south east of Llano. Roads like 308, 310 & 315. I'd like to meet up but I just won't know what day we'll be riding alone until we get together with our group. I'll PM you my contact info.

I will be in Llano for Stromathon and did it last year… good time! Butler maps is your friend. Most Gillespie county roads are paved and fine for two-up as that is what we were doing last year as the wife's K75 was sick. Lunch @ Castell store is high on my priority list... Q on Saturday, Steaks on Sunday. I will be on a white Sup-Ten with Jesse bags followed by a silver NC700X.

Hit Castell on the way down. Plan on riing some of the dirt roads around there today.

Road 2721 east out of F'Burg onto 1320 then 1323. Very nice ride and a great alternative to 290.

Anyone up near Marble Falls should head east on 1431 then left on 1174. Go about 4 miles until you see 328-Cow Creek Rd where you'll turn right. After the next 8 miles let me know if you think it was awesome like we did.

After that we continued east to Lime Creek road on east end of Lake Travis. Also a great ride and worth the trip. Did have to pay the price of being stuck on 620 for the ride home during Friday afternoon rush hour traffic, but we were clear of it in less than 30 minutes.

What a GREAT trip! I primarily used my Butler Map suggestions which really panned out. If we saw a 2-track leading off the road with no gates or private signs we'd head down it to see what happened. Some were spectacular while other were a quick u-turn and back on our way.

Had one small mishap on a concrete water crossing where the S10 took a nap. I must have been getting a little too confident and, BAM, we went down. Was probably doing less than 5mph so it was more shocking than sore. My wife's such a trooper. She just jumped back on and was ready to hit the next one. Now, when we came across a HUGE one on James River road south of Mason she wasn't all that keen on crossing that one but when I insisted she was glad we did it. About 15 feet from the other side a water moccasin swam about 10 feet from our front tire. She told me I better not drop it now and I was glad he stayed away from my feet that were down in the water!

A couple of BMW's saw the crossing and had turned around to double back but when they saw us head across they eventually decided to follow. One guy who was solo made it but the other, also with a passenger, dropped it about 3 times, but eventually got through. A couple of loaded dual-sports turned around.

We covered just over a 1000 miles over the weekend and almost none were boring! Below is a link to our pics

Good to hear you had a great time. I bumped into a couple of BMW's and Stroms at Harry's. Could not have asked for better conditions.

Enjoyed your pics! Could the weather have been any better? Was there a Ural with a dog on the other side of the river? The water Moccasin reference gave me a flashback to the John Wayne movie "The Cowboys" and a river crossing scene! :D We came from the north and took Simmonsville rd instead. Granmaw got enough dirt road on it! She and the NC did well and kept up a decent pace back to RR783.

Yes! After I crossed the river he came across and stopped to chat with us. He had a couple of guys with DS with him but they decided not to cross, or at the hadn't crossed by the time I emptied my boots and headed down the road.

The weather couldn't have been any better even if I had a couple of knobs to adjust it myself! One of the best riding weekends I've had.

Yep, that's the guy on the Ural we met and chatted with. Nice guy. Actually everyone we bumped into we super cool.

We're heading to Eureka Springs with another couple on an F800GS in a few weeks. Can't imagine lightning will strike twice and we'll have perfect weather again.
