i think the front engine bolts are m12x30 but not sure if there fine pitch as in 1.25 can anybody confirm if pitch is 1.25,

if so anybody in the uk point me in a direction where i can get a hex head m12x30 fine pitch in stainless

Just checked it using a thread gauge. The thread pitch for the front larger M12 bolts is indeed 1.25.

I can go out and measure/gauge everything if you like -- just let me know what you need. The online instructions show the bolt sizes/lengths but not the pitch.

Since you have to buy new hardware, you might consider upgrading to studs on those front two larger bolts -- make it easier to install everything with the skid plate / lessen the chance of cross-threading. Still need to do that myself. Think most people use 70~80mm length when using studs.

yer the bars i have have no bolts, no huge issue as such, as the altrider instru ctions show most of the bolts are basic m6x20 countersunk, m8x16 socket head, m8x40 socket head, i have all these luckly in stainless,
but i knew the 2 front engine bolts are m12x30 but thought they were 1.25 pitch so going to be a bit harder to locate, i don,t know if the 2 that comes with the kit are stainless

hey paul,

thanks for that do you think the 20mm thread would be ok as there not fully threaded bear in mind, the bolt has to go threw the crash bar that must be 5mm plus the bikes engine mount as well so i,m assuming theres 10mm lost there anyway

I think you're right with 20mm thread length, plus I would put a washer in there too. Just be aware that a2 stainless has a lower tensile strength than 8.8 grade steel screws.

Clarification:

-The hex bolts that came with the Altriders are class 12.9, I believe zinc-plated alloy steel.

-I have another set that are class 8.8 zinc-plated carbon steel stamped 01VK, think they came with my skid plate. (I deleted a post in which I thought they came with the Altrider bars -- sorry for any confusion. I've got three sets of bolts and got them mixed up).

Not sure if Paul would agree, but I'd note that we're screwing into aluminum, the threads of which may fail long before any of the above steel bolts will. The strength of a 12.9 bolt may be a false sense of security.

If you're shearing off M12 steel bolts of any kind on your bike, I'd venture you've probably got some broken bones to worry about as well.

I think the screws are high rated so that the bars deform first to absorb the impact, rather than just snap the bolts. Agreed, if you shear them off you're already in deep poopy.

To be safe I would recommend mirroring the specs that Heed gave me with my crash bars. A zinc plated 10.9 class bolt would do it. Black or self coloured will rust as there is no protection. They must be available from somewhere for Heed to be able to supply them. Titanium sounds sexy but it depends on the alloy and the heat treatment to determine the strength of them.

or titanium

Just done a bit of digging and the grade 5 spec of those bolts is between a class 8.8 and a class 10.9. Titanium isn't a material we work with at my place so can't advise on suitability with aluminium. Maybe someone with a deeper understanding of the material could help?

Regardless of galvanic compatibility, if titanium ever strips, snaps, or gets stuck, you'll have a hell of a time drilling it out. I generally avoid it for that reason.

-Found these class 12.9 bolts on Amazon UK, but they're not zinc plated.
-Found a place called Celtic Industrial Fasteners that isn't too far from Bridgend, and they carry 10.9 bolts, but it all appears to be coarse thread (1.75). Perhaps they could special order the correct thread.

Everywhere else I've looked so far either doesn't carry it, or doesn't have an online storefront. Might prove easier to smelt some ore and forge them by hand.

I normally buy such hardware from McMaster-Carr, but... I don't think they ship to the UK currently.
