Hi guys,

picture shows a ALTRIDER upper crash bar joing bracket with 2 roughly 11mm circles in, now some of these brackets come with a 6mm square nut dropped in them
for the bolt to come threw and tighten down, now the altrider ones that have the square nut dropped in the hole so it sits in the bottom has a little groove cut in the 4 corners where a square 10mm nut will drop in the hole and sit in the bottom and can,t spin,
now i have a dremel tool etc but don,t know if thats what to use not sure what bit will cut a tiny little chanel in 4 places so the square nut will drop down as you see in picture the bracket has the square nut sat on top but won,t drop in the hole until i cut a little groove in the 4 corners so it,ll drop

how or what should i use

Dremel with the little sharp point with the “diamond” surface. Just go slow. Should be no problem.

For the record if Jaxon and i ever give you conflicting advice, listen to him.

Im good with a wrench, but he does way more fabrication than i do. Way more.

Are the walls of that 11mm cylinder thick enough to allow you to cut the notches you need for that square nut? If not, another option would be to cut the corners off the square nut so it drops in and have a fabrication shop weld the nut in place - will take less than a 2 minutes to weld and grind it flush

ALTRIDER,
altrider bracket is what i have in the picture for the xt1200 upper bar they supply 8 of these 4 are lowers that just the bolt goes threw and top 4
has this square nut dropped in it for the bolt to go threw and pull it down on the bottom one,
i have the 4 with nuts in place and if you look close at the one with the nuts in place on the 4 corners where the nut touches there is a tiny groove cut out down to the bottom about 10mm down the sides whitch allow the corners of the nut to drop in the hole thats how altrider supply them,

what has happened i had the brackets powder coated red and while fitting the upper bars the one bracket with the 2 nuts in has snapped in half,
i rang altrider uk where i bought them from ok i shouldn,t have powder coated them ha ho, but they had a spare bracket in the shop whitch is the one in the picture but unlucky for me it was one that did not have the nut in it so i have to get two nuts into it for it to work,

the nut in the picture is one of the nuts out of the broken bracket and as i say altrider if you look close to the ones on my bike, the nut drops into the hole on the 4 corners has a little groove channel for it to drop into

Picture quality is terrible due to them being so small. You can buy them all over the internet.
I’ve done many “things” like this in the past. You can have them fit perfectly, but takes time and patience. Here are a few ideas.
If you have never performed anything like this pull out some scrap “metal” you will be cutting on a practice first. If it’s aluminum, cast / billet will cut differently. Go slow.

Those Altrider brackets are actually pipe and tubing clamps made by Stauff in Germany. An industrial supplier may be able to get you some if the need arises. A Dremel tool should work to cut the grooves, I looked at mine and those grooves are not very deep.

square nut in a round hole... something aint right... that looks like a manufacturer supply problem - what do they have to say about it?
