Strange thing happened. I parked my bike and noticed the top case lid was open and the latch appeared to be popped.
I shut the lid and clicked the latch on and now the case cannot be opened and the tumbler is in the sideways position.
I cannot get the key into the lock to rotate it and I cannot get the case open AND my helmet is inside the case.
I obviously got the whole thing out of sequence somehow and I am really stuck here, what are my options?
Before I contact the dealer, any suggestions?
This is really unusual and never happened before but I have read some horror stories about this exact scenario.
Looks like it happened to me.
I need to get it open, my helmet is inside.

Sounds like someone popped your lock. It is probably trashed from what they did. I would think your only choice would be to do the same thing. Take screwdriver and force it to turn.

I actually used it yesterday and it worked fine.

It is possible for the cam to get out of place when the lock cylinder is not installed, to reposition it you have to remove the cover below the lock on the inside of the case. Is it possible that the back plate screws have backed out? There has been some discussion of that in another thread.

The case is closed, I cannot get the key in it to open it.
The tumbler position (key slot) is sideways.
The key physically will not go in the slot, only about halfways and it cannot be turned.
I cannot get into the case without a sawzall.

I had the same issue with my top case. I took it to the dealership and they first gave me a new key, because the Yamaha OEM key is soft and flexible. Second, the lock it self had rotated in the case backing. They forced it opened and adjusted the locks position.

Thanks for the information folks, I got it open. The tumbler somehow rotated so the key could not be inserted.
I had to physically insert a straight slot (leatherman wave) screwdriver and rotate it to the correct position.
The key slid right in and it works as designed now. The question is how did it rotate that far on its own.
It took some torque to straighten it out to its normal position but I will go over it and tighten the screws if required.
This was a good lesson to learn and leaves me with a different feeling of what I thought was a pretty good design.
Of course, I will check all my latches, tighten whats required and check everything very closely before this happens again.

Check the stupid T10 anti tamper torn headed screws that hold the tumbler in place. They sometimes loosen and mess up how your bag opens.

I think I loc-tited mine in anticipation of them loosening as they were so tiny. (But may have over-tightened them a wee bit, as the lock is stiff to turn...)

They are surprisingly chintzy for costing a grand!
