Just took off my handguard to double check for you. The bar end weight is a 12mm allen. From my experience on my '15, I strongly recommend an allen socket and a breaker bar for this task. I thought I was going to snap off something before it broke loose. :D

Yep, 12mm. Sifted through many 10's in my garage til I had to go find a 12mm socket at the auto parts store.

Heated grip question

I was not sure where to post this. Quick question on the factory heated grips. I have the non ES version and I am thinking about getting the plug and play factory grips vs the Oxford. I have read the posts on the grips but the only question I have not seen answered is whether you can 1. Turn them on while riding. 2. Adjust the temp while riding? If someone would not mind answering those questions I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Re: Heated grip question

I have the ES model with the factory grips, and you can turn them on and off whilst riding and adjust the setting whilst riding. If yours are plug n play grips I expect they would be the same.

Re: Heated grip question

MG - I added the factory grips to my '15 non-ES bike. I bought the parts separately, it's over $100 cheaper than buying the Yamaha kit. Works as others described earlier, no limitation on when you adjust the grips or turn them on/off as long as the key is on. Turn the key off, the grips lose power, so no chance of running the battery down.

I have also noticed that if you have the grips on when you shut the bike off, when you start up next ride, the grips will still be on and set to what ever level they were set to when you last shut the bike off.

Note that the oxfords are a good product, but will be a stand alone system, no interaction with the Yamaha screen/display. Different resistance that is not compatible with the Yamaha ECU.

Hope that helps.

Re: Heated grip question

::026:: on what others said. OEM grips are adjustable and can be turned off and on while riding. There are 3 settings: lo, medium, and high available while riding. However you can set those 3 settings if you go into the settings screen. There its adjustable from 1 to 10 for each of the lo, med, high settings. Lo can be set on 2, medium set on 4 and high set on 8. Remember to keep the wire lubed, that's the weak point with OEM grips

Heated grip question

From the factory defaults of 1, 5, & 10 for L, M, & H respectively, I set low to 3, because I couldn’t even feel 1 or 2, bumped medium up to 6 and left high at 10.

Re: Heated grip question

Thank you very much for the inputs! I did see that you have to lube the grip on the throttle side. Do you have a recommended timing to do that? Otherwise, I am going to purchase the parts and install myself. This is a great bike and I really like this forum.

I greased mine just before joining the two halves together. Just followed the downloaded Yamaha instructions and all went together smoothly with zero issues. Just be mindful that there is an indexing hole on the front of the bars on the throttle side that a pin on the one side of the housing fits into.

Yes, you can! Left hand forefinger switch activates grip info screen; menu rocker adjusts temp levels .

ES? That means gen2, right? Are heated grips not stock on the gen2?
No, in your part of the world, "ES" means the electric adjustable suspension.
There is no way, in the model name, to tell if it is a gen 1 or 2.

Personally I think it can be read from the VIN number.

And no, heatet grip is not standard on gen 2.
Both gen 1 and 2 is avalible as "ES" and non "ES" model, and the non ES have not heatet grip (at least in Europe, not sure about USA)

I've made it through the first mild Arizona weather with my OEM add ons. I do notice just a mild difference between the temperature of the left and right, but it's not that big of a deal in my part of the world. If you are a true cold weather rider, then I'd look in to the fixes here to even out temps. Usability while riding is excellent. Installation, easy. If I had to do it all over...OEM again.

I have a 17 Tenere and no ES...NO heated grip. For and ES model costing approxiamtely 1000 more than a standard model Tenere, it is hard to believe the stealerships want around 630 to install them (parts and labor). That means the suspention is worth 400 bucks...I doubt it. I will install myself and be done with it. I really think the factory grips make the most sense given the plug and play feature. Where I live the heated grips are a must.

I like the way you can adjust the power level on each of the 3 settings and all done through the dash.

I've got adding heated grips on my to-do list for this year. 2016 non-ES. I understand the concept of connecting with the factory accessory plug. The question I have - I've installed a 3CS from Eastern Beaver. It's using the accesory plug. Has anyone wired in the OEM plugs behind the 3CS? Would I lose any functionality or the display of the grips on the dash? My other option is Oxford, which I have on other bikes. I'm not too excited about those for the S10, mostly due to fitment.

Thanks much,

The heated grips do not use the acc plug. They have dedicated plugs for the grips on the 2014 and up. They are very tiny plugs, one light grey one dark. They match the color on the plugs that come on the factory heated grips so it is a no brainer. All of this is providing you are talking about putting the oem ones on your 2016.
