2014 ES / Heated Grips Screen Disappears / 35,900 miles / Warranty Repair

Occasionally the screen for Heated Grips would disappear though would return. Eventually the screen would not return. Took the 2014 ES to the Service Department of PCP Motorsports (Sacramento CA). Talked to them about this problem. Service Rep goes to the Tenere and cannot find the screen. The Service Manager, Dave, gives it a try and eventually finds the screen then loses it. I left the 2014 ES with them and they gave this problem to a very experienced mechanic. A lot of research and eventually a call to Yamaha. Yamaha was aware of this problem but was not documenting it to the dealers.

If there is too much difference in ohms/resistance between the two heated grips the screen will disappear / show up as you scroll trough the screens.

The repair is to replace the heated grips. Yamaha covered the repair, parts and labor, under warranty.

* This error does not show a code or any other indication there is a problem/error.

Hope this helps.

sounds like a wire has been crushed, or lead pulled in the grip and is causing too much resistance.
the way the wire goes into the switch gear then to the handles is not that reinforced.
good to know that a difference in resistance causes this error and a test with a multimeter on the electrical connectors can confirm this.
thanks

Glad to hear they covered you. The right grip heater always goes first.

Thanks for sharing your experience as I have the same issue. I checked the obvious like fuses and plug in points.
I live in South Florida so it’s a low priority now but I plan on taking it to the dealer for warranty repair soon as I’m traveling north next month.
How long was your bike in the shop for this repair? -JEP-

To pull the panels and replace the grips is an hour job.

I figured the labor was NBD but parts can be a problem. I’m hoping with summer on it’s way that heated grips are in low demand and are setting in the dealers parts bin. -JEP-

Good luck with that. Most dealers don't stock any parts that aren't service related now. Hopefully the grips are in the parts system and you won't suffer any significant delay while they get them for your repairs.

Finally getting around to getting my heated grips repaired. It’s scheduled this week (and yes the parts needed to be ordered). I was glad to hear that it is covered under the Yamaha Y.E.S. Program! :)
I’m headed to colder climates so getting the grips repaired and digging out my heated gear! -JEP-
