I went to remove my Givi Trekker outback 42L top box last night and was dismayed that the whole lock tumbler came out with the key! Fortunately this box has a little plastic cap that snaps over the lock or I’d have lost the whole assembly on the road somewhere! This is similar to the problem with the Yamaha OEM bag locks.

Turns out there’s a nut (instead of two tiny screws) that holds the lock cylinder in place. It had loosened up and backed off. At least it was trapped inside / behind the mechanism. I removed the 8 screws inside the box to remove the latch mechanism and retrieved the wayward nut and lock washer. All I had to do is reassemble and tighten it. There was no sign that any kind of thread locker was used. I fixed that!

So if you have these bags or top box and note any in and out looseness of the lock cylinder I advise disassembling, tightening and thread locking that nut.

I changed the tumblers in mine when I bought them so they would all work off of one key. When I put the new tumblers in I used some Loctite to make sure the nut didn't come loose. I also tested all of mine to see if they were water tight. The top case and the 37 liter pannier were good but my 48 liter pannier leaked extremely bad. I went all around the seams on the inside with black RTV silicone sealant and it is good now.

So far my top box has been watertight in some pretty heavy, extended rain. I noticed though that there were little o-rings under the 8 fixing screws that hold the lock assembly to the rear of the case. They pretty much got shredded taking them out and putting them back in. I probably ought to go back and RTV those screws...
