Eric's post reminds me clarify something...
My pants are not mesh. In fact, the Fieldsheer pants have no vents in them at all, relying on Goretex to allow sweat to evap through. This has mixed results in my experience. You still sweat, but it does its job to a degree.
This also makes me wonder if these pants are part of the issue... we'll soon see.
Now, a mesh jacket I have and use. When used with an evap cooling vest, its fairly effective. I mean, you have to know what to expect, but it does work. Even in 100 degree heat this combo easily keeps your torso chilled about 20 degrees. Combined with an evap neck wrap and its excellent, helping your body remain cool.
Downside to a mesh jacket? I mean besides, in many cases, reduced effectiveness in a crash, is your arms will still get sun burnt if you wear a tshirt. I counter this with long sleeve tshirts or arm wraps, which I can also dampen to aid in cooling.
Keep in mind, that if you have synthetic materials near your skin, there is an increased risk during a crash. If you slide on the garment and build heat from friction, it could melt to your skin. It's all a trade off.
To further clarify what I mean when I say ATGATT, and how I apply it, here's a rundown on the gear I wear.
Shoei modular helmet
Helmet liner
Sunglasses with amber lenses (tinted visor built into my helmet - drop down style, in addition to the normal clear visor that covers your face. Pinlock equipped).
Hearing protection.
Evap cooling neck wrap when appropriate, or windblocker in cooler weather. Full on balaclava when temps drop in the winter.
Klim Badlands jacket
Fieldsheer adventure pants. (not exactly sure what makes them adventurous, but hey, I'm glad they're on my side. )
Alpinestars boots (street or off road, depending on the ride)
Lee Parks gloves, Alpinestars or Klim gloves, depending on the weather.
If riding long distances, often I wear my LDComfort under garments.
Sometimes wear my stand alone back brace as well for extra peace of mind.
May swap the Klim jacket for my mesh Fieldsheer jacket as temps climb.
And I should be getting my Least knee braces, so we can add them to the mix
