Edit: if I understand correctly, it has to be JASO MA certified. Put this into the search box: Is Motul 5100 same as Yamalube 10/40. Read through the thread, and see what you think.

I would steer clear of anything with Royal Purple on the label. Otherwise...keep it clean, slippery and the correct viscosity range.

YMMV

If it says JASO MA/MA2, then it's certified to be safe to use in a wet clutch motorcycle engine. Not having the JASO MA/MA2 certification doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't safe (not all manufacturers submit their oil to the certification process), but if it does have that certification written on the container, it will definitely be safe (for the clutch).

A secondary consideration would be if the oil has a diesel rating of "CD" listed on the container. The owner's manual specifically references not to use oils with a diesel specification of "CD" (it's on page 7-15). I'm not sure why, and I don't think that's even a current diesel oil rating, but that's what the manual says. As far as I can tell from my research, the "CD" rating was superseded back in '94.

API CI-4 hdeo r documented to be used in motorcycles. Something got to do with its ability to run in higher revs engine. Anti foaming comes to mind. Hdeo contains similar metal barrier protection additives such as zinc as found in bike specific oils. I would just stick with bike oils unless I can't find one n this hdeo is available. A 40 grade oil will unlikely to contain friction modifiers that can slip the clutch.
