I rode a KZ1000 around a deep sand rodeo arena once. Didn't like it. Learned to lean back, and stay on the gas. I'm still surprised how much the PA sounds like the Tenere.

Tried to order a Pan Am Special 8 weeks ago. Rotten experience.
Going to trade my Multistrada in on a super Tenere.
Yep.... Sounds about right.... If HD wants to keep new buyers, they need to start with sales too.... My 1st, was my last new HD purchase... My 2nd I bought used and if I get another, Ill go used also...

Visited a relatively close HD dealer, sat on one. Chatted up a friendly salesman, who is headed to visit AZ shortly, so we talked a while. He gave me a free ticket to the IMS here in Illinois starting tomorrow. He did offer a ride, but I plan to do that at the IMS tomorrow, so I declined. He said come back any time.

My first impressions: This thing is LONG. The tank is long, the wheelbase is long... Handle bars are swept back and low. Looks like 1 spark plug/cylinder, and they would take about 1 minute to change. The drive chain is huge. The whole bike, maybe because of the length seems way bigger. Walking back out to the S10, it looks really short and small in comparison. The one they have did not have spokes nor automatic height feature. Looked good though...

It will be interesting to see how long the line to ride will be at the IMS, and what their course will be. It is an out door event, being held on a produce farm. Went by today and a lot of dust was being raised just in preparation.

Odd. Pictures, and the two that I've seen in person (albeit at a distance) have looked short. Is it tall? That might cause it to look short wheel based.

According to what I found online, the HD wheelbase is 1.6 inches longer than the Tenere. Overall length is 0.2 inches longer.

the lines add to the perception of length .... felt no taller than the Tenere when I rode it . the handle bars are a bit odd after riding the Tenere , but is it a bad thing . one would have to put a few hours on it to tell.

From my IMS ride:
Nice bike but the ergonomics are way different than the S10. Foot pegs sit high and further to the rear. Handlebars are low and swept rearward. Would take some mods to fit me I think. Only rode pavement so can't comment on off road capability. Power comes on above 4k rpm. Lots there, but I am used to the S10 torque down low, so I am not used to revving to find it. It was a warm day and the heat off the bike was significant. Really uncomfortable at slow speeds/in traffic. Might be a contender if you can sort out the ergos.

Rode this today.
I was very impressed, I would say HD did a great job.
The pegs to seat was a lot more cramped than my bike but other than that I felt right at home. Rode it for about 30 min. and felt like I could ride it all day.
I tried all the ride modes [even Sport, Glen]
I noticed it runs 53 MPH at 3,000 RPM a Tenere runs 55 at 3,000 But this is just me but on the Tenere running 75mph at 4,000 the bike feels like it needs another gear. The HD was running more rpm at 75 but likes to rev and doesn't feel like it needs to up shift. Like Glen said the Tenere feels a lot torquer
When the dealer found out that my bike has over 268,000 miles they really wanted me on their HD, Trying to get me to take it out again and ride it more. They said nobody rides like that anymore.

I didn't get to ride one at the show, but they're not as ugly in person . . . . as long as it's not the orange/white. But, even if I took a test ride, and love the feel . . . . I wouldn't be able to stop worrying about reliability. I've always found it interesting that Yamaha only has a one year warranty; never had to use it. Further more, the only time my Yamahas have ever been in the shop, has been for routine maintenance that beyond my capabilities; no breakages. Same for the Kawasaki, and Honda. There's another brand that had a longer warranty . . . . but many more issues.

This newest generation of H-D may turn out to be reliable and carefree. But, it's way to early to tell.

This guy
that Rodeoclone [on the right] and I talked to down in Arkansas a couple months ago sent me a message yesterday.
He is selling the Pan American. Just to many things he doesn't like. Can't bond with it he said. He isn't new to Adventure bikes, he had a GSA before the P.A.

He just mentioned little things he just did not like but mostly sounded like he didn't really care for it.
He looks like a seriously big dude...wonder if that made a difference?

At 6'4", I found the Harley to be just a little cramped. A taller seat would have helped along with some handlebar risers. I guess both are available. I really liked the engine on the HD, good power and the fueling seemed spot on. I just did not get the urge to buy one. Now, when I test rode the GSA, my reaction was like WOW, I need to get one of these.
