As I get ready for the new riding season, I'm now in a position to get proper gear (last year it was a cheap scooter helmet, a leather jacket, and Mechanix gloves). I'm getting a Shoei RF1200 and a FirstGear Kathmandu jacket, but I can't find the "right" gloves. I want something in gauntlet length, textile/synthetic, that is waterproof and has decent armor, but isn't cold-weather insulated. Having Hi-Viz would be a bonus but isn't required. I would prefer to avoid leather, even though I know there are proper "waterproof" leathers; I have always felt that even treated leathers are going to harden up and crack over time if they get wet. Now that Clarino is common, it just seems the better choice.

Ideally, I'd love a pair of gloves just like the Moose Racing ADV glove just without the fleece lining.

The Icon TiMax gloves I have now are just slightly too small, and make my hands hurt after about 20 min of riding.

Any suggestions?

You can't go wrong with Dainese and Tuccano Urbano. These are the ones I have. However, there are many others. Always read reviews.

I'll admit that I'm a gear whore with more pairs of gloves than I know. The best thing to do is hit every cycle store you can and just try everything on. Between sizing, finger lengths, finger diameters, feel, etc, it's a very individual thing.

Dont know what you can get over there but but the 2 in 1 gloves are good, Held do them as do some others. But its worth having a look at gloves which use Outdry as its a laminated to the outer material. That way they dont soak up water and dry out fast.

I have several different pairs of gloves but the ones I use the most are Held Steve gloves, made with goatskin which is not effected by getting wet, they are my favorite gloves for riding in the rain.

Have to second the Held brand. My gore-tex Held gloves are the best glove I've ever used. Not cheap, but they do work.

I also have many many gloves. My favorites:

Held Airstream II - great in hot weather, very good ventilation.
Lee Parks Design Deer Sports - outstanding comfort with a gauntlet
Aerostich Elkskin Ropers - very comfortable, no gauntlet
Aerostich Triple Digit Rain Covers - works with any of those, the best rain protection I've found for my hands. I've never had a "waterproof" glove stay dry in hard rain for more than an hour, most for significantly less. But these work.

I've also got an ancient pair of Olympia winter gloves. They're so old I don't know the product name, and they don't seem to make the same one any more. They are insulated leather gauntlet gloves with some membrane similar to Gore-Tex. Not really waterproof, but they are definitely warm and comfortable, and they've lasted probably 20 years.

Thanks for all the replies, lots of good info and I really appreciate it. I hate to say that many of the gloves listed are a little pricier than I was hoping to spend, at least for this round of purchases (buying a helmet and jacket too). I will look at that Motoport glove a little more; it looks pretty close to what I was hoping for. I'll review the Held line too, even though I know they're going to cost nearly as much as my jacket.

I probably should have included in my first post that the jacket I'm looking at is the Firstgear Kathmandu, and so I want the glove I get to have that same versatility. I wish I could buy a separate set of gear for each riding situation, but I gotta be able to buy food and gas too, so for now it's gotta be gear that at least comes close to "do-everything" even though it means compromising a little here and there.

I have to ask, what are the gloves for? Your trip to India? If so, you do know that most of the leather gloves come out of India and Pakistan, so may be able to source a warm weather glove over there. On the other hand, perhaps if you disclose your hand size, there may be a member that would be happy to 'pay it forward' and let you have a unused pair?? You never know, if budget is tight then sometimes things turn up. I have a decent pair of Held gauntlet type leather gloves but not with hard knuckle protection, having said that, shipping would be the killer for me....... but someone more local? ::016::

The gloves are for India, but also for here in the US. I live up in the northeast in the US, so I need something that will at least keep my hands dry, but not be too hot in the summer. I can always add some kind of thinsulate inner glove for added warmth in cold dry conditions, but cold wet hands just suck. The last time I was over there, I had a pair of AGV sport gloves that were good in hot weather, and were all synthetic so I didn't mind if they got wet, but this time around I will need something I can use in all conditions, since one of my plans is a ride up into Kashmir and the Leh-Ladakh region. I know that a lot of the import gloves come from the India-Pak region, but actually finding them over there is difficult. Most of the factories don't have any kind of local distribution system; they just make them and dump them in big containers for shipment out of the country.

As for my size, I am somewhere in the 2XL-3XL range depending on the brand. My Icons (for sale in the Little Pimpin section) are 2XL and slightly tight. My palm size is 4.3 inches across at the widest point, or 11.25 inches in circumference at the same point.

I think u might be right on the Kangaroo not Goatskin , whatever it is rain doesn’t seem to effect them much at all, mine have been soaking wet hundreds of times. I don’t think they have any of the special stuff built in for operating touchscreens but mine actually work better for operating my GPS than my bare fingers ! My Held gloves have probably been used for over 200,000 miles and they are still in pretty good condition, I would gladly buy another pair if I needed them.

Interesting, but at nearly 3x the cost it's a little steep. Plus I kind of like the 3/4 jacket style more than the waist-cut. The customization is nice though.
It is the last jacket you will ever need to buy. They have 3/4 length ones too.

My message would be ............. Always wear a good quality pair of gloves & never ride anywhere without. Just a silly low speed flop-over can have horrible consquences for riders with bare hands - believe me, I have taken them to A&E for repairs.

I reckon kanga is best & I prefer leather, but there are some decent ventilated & reinforced textile gloves around, with leather palms & fingertips & hard plastic knuckle protection that may be easier to use in hot conditions.

Although expensive, Motorport stuff is one of the best. I have the air mesh over pants, and they work great in the summer with just a pair of shorts on. My sizing for some reason makes it difficult to find the right size. If the waist is correct, the length is too short. If the length is correct, then the waist is a size or two too big. Custom from Motorport, and all is well with the world, other than my wallet.

I have the racing gloves from them, but only wear them in the winter. I find them to hot and bulky for summer riding.

I appreciate all the input, and I'm taking notes. I placed the order for my gear last week so I'd have it available when I went to pick up my bike from storage, and I ended up getting a pair of Moose Racing ADV1 gloves. I know they'll be too warm for the summer months, but they're waterproof, and will be more comfortable between now and Memorial Day, and then again once September rolls around. I'll just have to find a pair of hot-weather gloves for the middle of the season, and for India once I get there.
