After a little incident out in the boonies of Utah, at the far end of Moody Canyon Trail, off of the Wolverine Loop, off of the Burr Trail, where I ended up with my tibia (shinbone) broken in two places, and riding for six days in that condition after I wrapped it with an ACE bandage (Hey, I ain't cuttin' a ride short just for a dad-gum broken leg.), getting back home and having to have surgery, and now having a titanium plate and a collection of dry wall screws and deck screws holding everything together - I've decided to convert over to soft luggage saddle bags.

And to do it right, I need some kind of a rack system. I've got it narrowed down to the two choices in the title, above. I want to be able to quickly remove the racks for the times that I'll be doing afternoon or day trip rides.

  • Of the two choices, above, what would be your personal choice?
  • Which one keeps the center of gravity the lowest?
  • Which one keeps the bags the closest to the bike, without being too close?
  • Any big cons for either brand?
  • Which brand would best fit soft bags around 35 liters in size?

I know that's a lot of questions, but I sincerely appreciate your input.

Thanks,
Tim

I had the Givis on my last S10. They work as advertised. Personal taste but i like the look of them better than the SW Motechs.

So does this mean, with your bionic leg, and soft bags, your up for another adventure?
it’s great to hear your mending and thinking about the bike again. I hope all is well.

I have the Bumot Xtremada soft panniers but only installed for the last month and no long trips with them yet. I have them loaded down with a some of the stuff that I would normally carry with me and I can hardly tell they are there.
"74L of total capacity - 35L full-size and 31L exhaust cut for the main panniers, plus two 2L pockets on the front and rear of each pannier." Link: https://www.advmotorrad.com/shop-by-motorcycle/yamaha/xt1200z-super-tenere/BUMOT-Xtremada-Soft-Panniers
I'll have get some pictures of them installed with my loadout for camping here soon if work can let me have more than a weekend off.

Yep, I'm looking forward to further adventures. I'm retiring at the end of September. Gotta get my strength built back up in my legs before hitting the trails again.

I have the Givi PLR racks on my S10 and they keep my Givi Dolomiti cases nice and tight to the bike and I have no reason to think they would be less suitable with soft bags plus, you can completely remove them in literally less than 5 mins.

I do like the PLR2119 racks on my bike(s)
Yes...theyve been on 3 different bikes now...a 2013 & 2 2014s

The Givi racks are pretty close to being equal spacing from side to side...but I made mine even closer by adding a couple of washers under each of the 2 r/h mounting bolts which go in the round Givi cylinders with quick turn receptacles. The threads are still long enuff to hold the racks with full cases securely.
Looking at the bike from rear...it looks almost equal.IMG_20170711_184712.jpg20200502_111211.jpg20200521_135317_HDR.jpg

Just tossing out another option. Not quick detachable, but really protects the exhaust and rear of the bike more than normal pannier brackets. I have one Rumbux Endurance Rear protection bar set left for the Super Tenere. $250 shipped to your door. LINK

If you have the xt1200z you’ll need to buy the pillion grab handles otherwise the Givi pannier frames won’t fit.
