Givi PL2119 vs PLR2119 luggage racks.

Which ones should I go for? The quick release PLRs are about $260 and the standard PLs are $180. I'm not your typical ADV rider with a fat check book so I'd like to go for the less expensive option, is it a serious PITA to remove the luggage fitted to them?? I don't see myself removing them too often either and I'm not going to mind spending five minutes (if that's about how long it takes) turning a wrench at my destination IF I feel the need to remove them so I don't think I need the fancy ones?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have the PLR racks, I bought them second hand. The luggage attaches to both the PLR racks and the standard racks in exactly the same way. It is the PLR racks themselves that are quick release but to be honest, in all the time I’ve had them I have only removed the racks about twice. For my money, if I were buying now, then I would buy the standard racks and spend the difference on petrol.

Ah. I was under the impression that it allowed the luggage to be removed easier. In that case its a no-brainer, I'm going to go for the standard racks then.
Thanks for the info!

I can’t get my head around the idea of locking panniers if someone can just remove the frames with the panniers attached and make off with them.

Quite simply, you cannot remove the racks when the cases are mounted on the bike. Well let me correct that; you can if you have a hacksaw or angle grinder secreted about your person!

Ah, I see - I always thought that should be the case, but I’ve misunderstood this about the PLRs for years! Doh!

Below is my first S10 with PLR2119s racks fitted....unless you look VERY carefully they look just like PL2119s

This picture below is my present bike with the PLR2119 frames removed but mounting brackets still on the bike. I like this system as the frames can easily be removed when you're not using the panniers and you're not left with the scaffolding. Unfortunately they will NOT work with the Givi Outbacks, but WILL work with the Kappa equivalent

Finally the image below shows my bike as it is now with the Outback topbox and Pl2119CAM frames (+ toolbox) for the Outback Panniers

Hi,
On my KTM 1190 I do have the PLR (Removable) that I never remove... Thus, I went for the PL standard for my XT1200ZE.

Im wearing Kappa KLG46 & KLG33 + Givi V56 topcase. We are really in love how quick & easy it is to lock or unlock these suitcases on bike once arrived at hotel for a nice rest.

Kappa is a subsidiary of GIVI and there is no real difference. I purchased a Givi SL103 secure set of 3pcs to harmonize the key. It is really easy to swap the standard key lock Kappa or Givi with the better Givi secured.

To attach the Givi Outback you simply position the pannier on the rack and push until it clicks into place. I think that the Kappa have to be 'screwed on' using a couple of large, threaded serrated 'wheels' that are inside the pannier....a bit like the early Tourance panniers

Not KLG but Kappa KGR46 + KGR33, 46l +33l, Givi Monokey system.

Kappa KRG are exactly like Givi Trekker, except the cover who is in one piece. From this video, you can see how easy it is to mount/dismount them in 20s. You can also notice the 2pcs plastic fingers dedicated to Givi Trekker top-part cover closing.

Available in 2 colors, alu or black, Kappa KGRxx are cheaper than Givi for same quality and purpose. If you search a bit, in Italy, you can get KGR46 for 160Euro https://www.varashop.it/moto/bauletti/borse-laterali.html#

Probably didn't express myself clearly.

If you want the Kappa equivalent of the Givi Outbacks they have to be locked on using 'pins' (not wheels, I was wrong there) inside the pannier as shown at 13m 15s in the video

That new S10 looks good!
Out of curiosity, why did you get a new one?

Bit more complicated than that, victorluiz1980 & Rob, and quite a long explanation so please bear with me

My first S10 (top picture) was an ex demo,,,,then they brought out the World Crosser......and I thought 'WOW' and as I was offered a decent deal (we always think we get a decent deal) I traded

I loved the World Crosser but after 2 years of ownership and about 15k miles a myopic 84 year old pulled out in front of me. Although I was wearing a day-glow vest and had my headlights and spots on he claimed he didn't see me

P1030350a.jpg

Luckily my sixth sense told me he would probably pull out on me so I'd hit the brakes hard just as he crossed the line, Got my speed down to about 5mph and as he turned the right hand side of the bike clashed with the right hand side of the car. I must have over corrected as I bounced off the car and the bike went down on the right hand side....so all the damage was on the right hand side and I was thrown off. I was able to ride the bike home

Apart from a few light bruises I was OK. The police arrived and told the old man it was his fault. Unfortunately he told a mass of lies to his insurance company which didn't add up....the biggest one was that he had completed the turn, was travelling at about 20mph when I came around a bend out of control doing at least 55mph when we collided! I had to put the case in the hands of a solicitor and it was scheduled for court. Almost 12 months later his insurance company settled about 1 week before the case was to be heard.

It's a long explanation but I knew from day 1 that I was going to win the case especially with the police as a witness. Due to his lies and having to get a solicitor involved I received compensation for my slight injuries. This money and the fact that the bike had lost it's appeal to me led me to trade in for a Gen 2 with electronic suspension. All my farkes and World Crosser bits were transferred across....hence the Gen 2 World Crosser.

The last picture was taken in Spring this year when the bike had about 44k miles on the clock

If it hadn't been for the old man there is a good chance I would still have the original World Crosser

Thats crazy. Glad to hear you came out of it alright.
I've resigned myself to the fact that someday someone is going to cut in front of me too late for me to avoid, or run into the back of me. I can only pray its at a manageable speed rather than a dangerous speed.
