Thanks for the concern. I spent 4 years as a mechanic in a motorcycle shop in high school and college, 3 engineering degrees with a phd in EE, and a few patents in the areas of autonomous vehicles, so swapping cables/connectors/harness shouldn't be a problem. (I've done my own ee design/cable/harness design and manufacturing (to ensure that it's right), so no problem). My plan is to leave my bike alone until it shows symptoms, and if it does start with the high idle/no idle problem, i'll fix it then.

Thanks again.
My 2012 serial number ending 000275 did not show signs either. I choose to take it in anyway. My dealer told me after the recall was performed that they didn't know how I got by this long as the wiring harness was in very poor condition and throwing codes.
Just a heads up before you take off on a trip.

I ordered the recall kit today and should have it in next week. I'll take pictures of what's in the kit and report back here asap.
I used another dealer, and the website took my order, but i was told that they can't send me the parts. I tried your "cheapyamahaparts.com" link; i hope that this goes through. if not, then i might try the shop at which i worked in high school to see if they can send me the harness kit.

Thanks for the link - i hope that it works.

The dealer I use called me today and said they had to have the vin number in order to get the kit. He said he would call tomorrow if they run into any problems.

Thanks for the heads up. What codes was it throwing, did they say? Can we see those codes if we go into diagnostic mode on the bike? That would be good to know.

Thanks.

All that " credential wall paper " and ingenuity and he rides a Super Tenere !! says something about the machine . :)

Mines in the shop as we speak I have 42000Kms on her so trying to swindle a deal on the valve check do to the fact there right there anyway . My dealer has said it is a challenging job to but the tech is pretty anal and we have had a few conversations so I'm pretty confident they have done a few so far . They have no issue removing Altrider bars but I totally agree with lots of inmates sentiments about letting other hands wander over your machine . I personally don't have a ton of skill in the areas of say Blitz or lots of the other inmates but I do the stuff I can or the stuff I watch the videos of or pics of and get up the confidence to tackle . One of the reasons I bought the bike was for its reliability so I don't have to do to much technical stuff to deal with .. oil, grease , minor adjustments ..... RIDE !! Love the thread I will update when I get my bike back

Don't know the codes.
Just what the guy at the dealer told me.
I actually just got home with the bike.
Runs great now.
Sorry I wasn't more help

My thought would be that the harness you got, probably doesn't have the fix. Just that you have one that is not screwed up, and subject to the recall. But I would confirm with Yamaha. Who knows how long they knew about it, and were silently fixing the issue on the inventory they had, until you and others with the problem forced them.

Yeah talked to Robert service manager at Bobby J's in Albuquerque and confirmed i need to bring it in if the VIN # fit the recall.
That it involves more than the new harness that was installed by Yamaha.
He says it will take a week!! But i do notice it has been getting a little twitchy on the idle from time to time.
My wife hates driving down to Albuquerque it like over 100 miles one way.
But if i need it done i will do it.

What extra is he talking about? Kinda curious on what more your bike has over everyone's else, now that everything was fixed. The tech did my recall in about three hours, and talking to him afterwards, he said he cleaned up some of the wiring from the headlight recall. He said nothing was wrong, but it wasn't a clean job, and there was points that water could get into the harness that he took care of.

My bike every so often like to "twitch" while idling. Stays in the correct range, but sometimes feels like it is "surging". It is only about 50-100 RPM, and so far in 54K miles, it hasn't caused a problem.

Don't know i didn't ask but since Bobby J's was U.S.A. Yamaha's pick for sending out a tech to do my harness he knew what was done to my bike.
They have done two and he tells me something more has to be done than what i had done, i believe him.
I didn't get into detail as he was busy.
You got to remember this service manager went above and beyond to get my issue solved out of warranty may i add and done FREE with $500.00 of Yamaha credit in my wallet on top of it.
Oldest Yam dealer in the country and he's been with them since darn near day one.

I got the recall kit in. Not much to it, so I assume most of the time involved in the install is just getting to everything. It didn't come with any instruction so as soon as the parts guy gets them to me I'll scan and post them. It did come with two zip ties and a roll of what appears to be some good quality tape.

So all this recall mystery and that's all the replacement parts?
One of those "It's a $2.00 thermostat but $$300.00 in labor.
Ford Ranger 4.0 the whole FI top assembly has to come off the manifold for two or three bolts holding the thermostat cover on..

Do the connectors have any identifying numbers? It seems like corrosion resistant connectors for the throttle sensors are the only real change. It could be easier to clip wires and just replace those connectors.

In a nutshell here's what's going on. You're removing 6 wires from the ECU, plugging in 6 wires from the new sub harness, unplugging 2 couplers from the throttle bodies and plugging in the 2 couplers from the new sub harness. The 2 connections at the TB's share some of the wires and I don't have a clue why they connected these wires together with that clear insulator on the outside of the wire harness instead of on the inside as they usually do. It may be to get access to the connections in the future for some reason. There are also instructions to cut the 2 TB couplers and the 6 wires from the ECU off and tape the loose ends up. I assume this is so they can never be hooked back up by accident. Yamaha is paying the dealer 2 hrs. labor to do the job.

I agree. It looks like this whole process is to replace the TB connections, UNLESS they think there is a problem inside the main wire harness and this fix is a lot easier and cheaper than replacing the entire harness. All the wires are color coded.
