Garmin sat nav solution

With the frosty weather hitting us it's been frustrating just looking at the bike sat in the garage. Boxing day was fantastic though. Temp 7 deg and clear blue sky. Despite still suffering with this bloody cold I finally got out for my second long ride on the Ten. MK to Walton on the Naze to try a few things out. My main issue was sat-nav location. I had already tried the short arm on the Ram Mount fixed to the bar above the instruments. Completely and utterly useless!! The bar shakes a bit with the screen assembly and that all gets amplified by the arm holding the satnav. It doesn't matter how tight you do up the U bolt it just squashes the bar and the whole unit just flops down. So I have been busy making a more suitable bracket, see pics. This bracket is machined from billet aluminium. It's designed to easily clamp firm on the bar without squashing it. It attaches the satnav mount properly to allow the rubber bushes to do their job. This test one is just painted satin black but I've made a small batch that will be black anodised. All screws are stainless. My test route to the coast was on a wide range of roads and surfaces from bumpy slow narrow country lanes to smooth fast dual carriageway.
The results were infinitely better than the Ram set up. The bracket does not slip around the bar at all. Yes there's still some shake on bumpy roads but there's no amplification and the satnav is clearly viewable at all times. I've seen the screen stays that can be fitted to minimise shake but I really didn't want to go down that route. For me and my set up this works perfectly. I've tried it with both my Garmin 660 and 590. Both units are positioned to leave a clear view of the instruments including the indicator lights. The 590 can only fit this bracket in landscape mode, if there's enough interest I can do the portrait mode as well. If anyone is interested in one of these let me know, they will be available in a couple of weeks. I'm expecting them to sell for £38 but the initial batch will be on offer to forum members for £25. All I ask for other than that is some feedback.

That looks great! Is the cross bar that it is mounted to OEM on the 2014 and newer? Will it mount on a madstat adjustable windshield bracket cross bar?

Very nice. I will take one if the shipping to the USA (Sacramento CA 95820) is not too bad.

Nice, I'll be up for a unit when available. ::008::
I'm new to the Super Ten but I believe it's the second generation bikes that this suits. So that'll be 2014 onwards. I'm not familiar with the Madstat setup. So long as you have a 1/2" diameter bar to fit it to this will fit. It puts the bottom edge of the satnav 3/4" below the centre line of the bar. Hopefully that helps.

Could well be up for one of these, I have a 3d printed one which works well with the stock Zumo 660 mount but I've bought a Touratech locking mount and the mounting screws are fixed and too short to use with the plastic mount.

Thanks for your interest everyone. I'll get back to you all as soon as I'm ready to ship. I'll be looking at TomTom at a later date and also the Garmin portrait mode.

Put me down for one shipped to USA. I agree the Ram isn't a very good option and looking forward to getting this, just let me know when and how to pay you.

Hi Charlie, can you tell me how thick the mount is where the sat nav mount attaches? I've got a Touratech mount that has fixed length bolts on it that are only 12mm long

I've ground down my 3D printed one as in the pic below but it's taken all of the strength out of the mount, I'd put some thin aluminium either side of it but as you can see there is very little thread showing as it is.

Do you think your mount will work with the TT mount?

Scratch all of the above! Worked out how to strip the mount to fit longer bolts! Let me know when you are ready to ship!

Thanks for the great response. I've shipped to everyone that purchased. It's been pointed out that I made a small error, I supplied the wrong screws to mount your cradle to this bracket. The ones I supplied have heads that are too high, they don't allow the cradle to click in position. I tested mine with dome head screws and then went and supplied the wrong ones in the kit!! :-[
I'm posting the correct ones to everyone.

Hey ok it works for you but it kinda defeats the object of keeping the satnav on a short mount. I'll be interested to hear how you get on with it.
