Garmin Montana 680

I have ordered this GPS. It appears to the most useful, portable, mountable and water proof unit available.

When I first discovered the prices of motorcycle specific GPS's, I thought there must be a less expensive option. Some suggested a large screen automotive unit which I could just place a zip bag over when it rains. I found it difficult to find cradles and or mounts for the cheap units and most had very poor reviews. The last thing I want is a failing unit in the middle of a coast to coast trip.

I have also ordered a powered RAM mount, which will attach to the Madstad crossbar, and City Navigator North America NT.

I would like to hear from other users of the Montana and share your experiences.

I have the Montana 600. It's 5yrs old now. I like it. The best thing is the rugged mount. For now I'm only buying GPS units that use that mount, which I think is only Montana and the 276CX.

I have what you ordered. I've had it for two years with no problems. Love it. Learning curve but not bad.

Depends on what type of riding you do.
I use the Montana 610T for dual sport riding on trails. It's very good for following tracks. It is mounted on my WR250
I use an old Zumo220 with lifetime city navigators updates for street riding ( unpaved included) to follow routable routes (different from tracks) . It is mounted on my Tenere
The Montana has it's limitations for long routes that the Zumo doesn't. They are both the same, for going from point a to B, but when I plan a route on Basecamp, I don't go from only 1-2 points.
The zUmo 220 doesn't do tracks, so it is useless for trail riding and not as rugged.
The most rugged is probably the Garmin 64. smaller display, but lighter than the Montana and has the same features. Doesn't even require a wired mount. I can ride on a double AA batteries for 2 days.

Successful 610 user for a bunch of years now. Running the rugged mount. Pro tip: I ordered the RM from Home Depot for $24.95 pick up at store. not sure if still that price.

Run the automotive mount when in the auto.

use for routing and following tracks. the more you use it the better you get.

setting up different profiles is a strength.

Used a bunch of times on backpacking trips and finding geocaches with no problem.

One thing that's cool is to mark "i want to know how to get there waypoints" as i ride for things i see off to the side or in the distance. has never failed to get me to those points.

lastly although you can get garmin maps and i have both CN and the 25k topo which are routable there are an abundance of free maps that are reasonably as good and up to date.
