Thanks for the info everyone. I got a quote from World Nomad of $75.00 for 2 weeks. Decided to run with them. I hope I won't need it but it's good to have and not very expensive.

yes you do, I gave up on tracking a while ago. I dont see the benefit of it, do you use it and may I ask why?

I typically travel alone and often ride and camp remotely. I share my Spot with family members. When I stop for the night I send a "Checkin" notification. This tells my ICE contact that it's a planned stop (vs no tracking movement because I'm laying in a ditch somewhere). Tracking also gives my last known location and permanent trip history record as I auto upload to Spotwalla. I have all my routes starting 6 years ago that I can review online from anywhere.

I used to do the same, when I had a SPOT. Now I have an in-reach mini. With the plan I have, there are unlimited "canned" text, these are set up on-line. I have a START/STOP, DOING OK and NO CELL/WILL CONTACT LATER. Then you can set up 10 "CUSTOM" ones as well.

I use the unlimited CANNED for MORNING/Start and EVENING/Stop (camping/hotel) like you describe, the no cell is a "still moving check'in". No tracking but all free and I have 2 way TEXT COMMs if they need to get ahold of me. Should I get hurt and no EVE or still moving message, she can send me one and it has the GPS CORDs for body recovery.

I gave up on SPOT, this is better IMO.
