I am looking at purchasing one of these for my super tenere. If the leads are connected to the battery with a fuse put in so the base is always live.has anyone had any issues with the battery losing its charge. How have others provided power to the unit? I intend on charging the unit at home before travelling on the bike. How long have users had out of the battery of this unit when it has no power supply? I am new to sat navs.my sat nav since 1990 riding around Europe has been a map stuffed into a tank bag.

I have always wired my Garmin units to power with the key-on, that way it always turns off when the bike does. This also charges the battery when the bike is running.
There has only been a time or two when I've wanted to use the Garmin when the bike is turned off. Both of my Zumos had built-in batteries, so you can use them with the bike powered off.
Use a 3-amp fuse.

I have my 396 mount always powered on. Never an issue but I ensure the rubber waterproof cap is secured onto the connector when gps is removed from the mount. I park my bike uncovered so could see a problem if rain puddled on connector contacts. Might short it out, drain battery and/or damage.

Fyi, only reason I installed always powered was fuse block didn't have a switched power position remaining. I felt safer using separate powered on then piggybacking a switched position.

You can get a pigtail that plugs into the extra 3 prong plug on right side of bike. I think it is for aux lights. Google YouTube and there is a video specific to the Tenere and the GPS install. I have done it and like the piece of mind that the battery won't discharge if I forget to unplug the unit.

This ……. Spot on. Why wouldn’t you when yamaha have provided such a simple solution? Wish my other bikes had it.

By all means charge your SatNav before you go, but you really, really need to hook it up to the bike’s electrics, either hard-wire to the battery but even better is Wenisgudenuf’s elegant and excellent solution in posy #6 above.
