Fuel Tank Help - Different Years

Does anyone know if fuel tanks are interchangeable between different model years?

I recently bought a 2016 ES in black and the gas tank on the bike has multiple dents, scratches, and pits. I found a pretty clean used black tank from a 2014 but I'm hoping someone can confirm that it will mount properly on my 2016 before I order it.

I appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thank you!

Both are Gen 2. Pretty sure they are all interchangeable. My 2014 actually has a 2012 tank, changed when the PO liked the old color better when he traded up. The black colors will likely be different. Does it come complete with associated hardware, or will you have to swap it all?

Thank you both very much!

I’ll have to swap the hardware from my existing tank but that’s no big deal.

Getting that fuel sender out of the tank is a tight squeeze. And yep, all are the same. I've got a '14 on my 2012.

I am fully sure that they all are interchangeable. But they have different colors. You have to choose the best color which exactly matches your current one. Make this more stylish and attractive.

One way to check if a part will fit multiple years of bikes is to go to an OEM parts seller (like Rocky Mountain ATV) and look up the part for your bike to get the part number. Then you can check on other model years of your bike on the same site and see if other model years for that same part share the same part number. If the part numbers match, then the part will fit. It works for all kinds of parts like fork tubes, bearings, calipers, etc.

Yep, you're right, and I should have realized that. I never had to buy a painted part before, but I checked the fuel tanks and saw that the numbers differ from model year to model year. My bad.

My first S10 was a 2011 model, followed by a 2013 World Crosser (both Gen 1) and then an electric suspension 2015 model.

I preferred the tank colour scheme on the 2011 bike compared to the 2013 and 15 bikes so I kept it and used it on all of them.

Yes, the tank is the same for all years, or at least 2011-2015

Thanks, Mike. How did you make the Airflow windshield work on your gen 2 bike? I assume you’ve been happy with it?

If you take all the Gen 2 screen adjustment and sat nav bar off you are left with 2 vertical screen mounting bars.......these are exactly the same as on the Gen 1

Unfortunately the black 'side plastics' are slightly different so you need to put a spacer (about 1cm) on the bottom mounting bolts. Obviously you will also need longer screen mounting bolts.

To make a good looking job you will also have to source the black pieces of plastic that cover the screen holes and the mounting bolts go through. I don't think these are still available from Yamaha so you may have to go to a breakers. The photos below might make this clearer

It sounds complicated but is really easy once you get going

I really like the screen. I have it on my present 2019 model and can ride at 70mph+ with my visor up. It works for me but I can't guarantee it will work for you

Fantastic. Thank you so much for such thorough information, Mike. I had an airflow on my last bike (14 VStrom 1000) and loved it, so I was a bit bummed to see there wasn't a direct fit option for gen 2 S10s. The ideal scenario for me would be a madstad adjustable bracket with an airflow, but it doesn't seem like all those stars are going to align.
