Fuel tank damage —-> repair?

So I had a slow get off in some mud yesterday and upon picking the bike up, noticed that the bolt for the peg had snapped and SOMEHOW I had done some damage to my fuel tank by putting some decent size dents in it. The only thing I can guess is that my knee hit it BUT it was slow and I don’t ever remember hitting my knee on anything nor hitting it in 2 spots!!! What do you guys recommend, taking it to a body shop to have them fix it OR buying a new tank and then having it painted to match again....guessing neither will be a cheap option. Anyone have any experience with this???

The metal is pretty thick on a tank, once it's dented, chances of popping out dents without damage is pretty slim. You can buy a new tank through Yamaha for $400.00 give or take, and it will come painted already the correct color if you order the correct part number.

Dayum dude, two healthy hits in one fall! Sure looks like knee impacts. Don't think the creased metal will allow a flawless repair.

Is TABASCO still making his 'Frankentanks'? ie cutting the tank horizontally and welding in a strip of metal to create a tank 8 litres larger than stock?

He may be able to make use of your tank as a donor.

I had a dent in my tank, and nowhere near the size you have. I checked into several shops to see what it would cost, and the difference in buying a new tank was only around $50. Someone on here was selling a tank in the same color, so I bought it and replaced for less than what the repair would have cost.

The bike still works OK, with the dent? The trouble with fitting a new tank is that the same thing can easily happen again......

OK, when you sell up, a perfect tank is expected. In the meantime, if you want to stop reminding yourself of the fall, then you could always fit a tank bra ........... https://www.silverstonemotor.com/en/tapis-de-reservoir/6931-bagster-motorcycle-tank-cover-for-yamaha-xt-1200-super-tenere-2010-to-2017-3366142000221.html
That's what I did years ago when someone put a dent in my tank. Worked great and you can also get tank bags for them too.
