Fuel leaking

I noticed a fuel smell the last few times I filled up. I wondered if it had anything to do with the fuel filler mod I did a couple weeks ago (punched 5-6 holes in the filler neck with an awl and hammer). I have filled the tank fuller when I top up since the mod, thought that was the source of the smell. Well, took a couple day trip and noticed twice if I filled the tank I noticed gas dripping from the bottom right side of the tank when on the side stand. Once the tank was less than full, I did not notice the fuel drip anymore.
Any ideas?

Yea, You just over filled it, no problem. Do not over fill the bike in the summer and let it sit out in the sun (over filled). It could pop your tank or even be dangerous. If you top off in the summer make sure you are hopping on the highway to burn off the extra at the top. If you punch the holes these are a few "rules" you need to live by.

Thanks for the feedback. I read a bunch of posts about fuel dripping out the rubber hoses. I just raised the tank, the rubber vent/overflow tube are still attached. My fuel was NOT running out the hoses, but dripping from the bottom of the tank itself somewhere. I was jumping right back on the highway, and didn't worry about a little leak.

Have you had the fuel pump o-ring factory recall done?

Problem found. Stupid user error!
When I punched holes in the fuel filler neck, apparently I got a little carried away with the hammer and awl. When I pull the gas tank off, I noticed two little dents directly under the fuel cap. One of the two was leaking. See attached picts. I pounded the dents down, sanded the area, and put a little JB weld over the dents. We'll see how that holds up. JB's web site says it is resistant to gasoline.

If that doesn't hold you can send me your tank. I'll weld up the holes, no charge.

That's a truly incredible offer from Jaxon! That just goes to show you what kind of stand-up guy he is, and how he runs his business - customer service first and foremost! ::008::

On another note, if what you have amounts to pinholes then you could easily solder them up. Just make sure all the fuel is out of the tank and that it has adequate ventilation and no spark sources. Heating the tank in any way can get some fuel fumes going that could be pretty easy to ignite. Soldering should be a more durable, more reliable repair than JB Weld.

Just FYI...

If filling tank to the top and not riding far put bike on center stand .
I use this method and notice no more leaking when full.

Jason,
Thank you for the kind offer, I will consider it. It was looking at your modified tank, and thinking doing something like that. I rode about 800 miles this weekend and varied between 33 and 49 mpg. Now of course, with a hole in the tank my fuel range was certainly diminished, but still that seems like quite a swing. This bike seems like it has pretty poor aerodynamics; the wind direction, and cruising speed makes a huge difference in MPG. My previous bike was a Honda ST1300, and 300 miles before reserve was common. The Honda had a larger tank, but seemed less effected by speed and wind direction. The Tenere, I have hit reserve at 160 to 170 miles a couple times.

out of curiosity, how much more fuel capacity does this tank mutilation mod yield?

Whoa there. Mutilation?

Ok, he got a little careless and ended up with a leak. But still, I like to think it was a "modification". Not mutilation. :)

Speaking of mileage, it's more disappointing than you think. The odometer on my bike is about 4% optomistic and the MPG avg on the dash always reads higher than when I divide it by gallons used vs miles traveled. Since the miles the odo displays are 4% more than actual miles traveled, the mileage is worse yet

What? It's worse than the 33mpg I saw? LOL!
I cut out the cursed fuel filler neck last night. So I will be able to fill the fuel tank like a "normal" bike now. With the poor fuel economy of this bike, I need all the extra fuel I can get.

Why do you think it is off? I assume it is because the speed is off by that much but in my experience, every Japanese bike I have ever had is/was optimistic by 5 to 7 percent on the speed but right on for the odometer. But I have to admit I haven't actually checked on the Tenere. Should I?

Look here. http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=3156.0

Per Stevepsd

29 DEC 2011 UPDATE:

After running the tank dry, there was 9 ounces of fuel remaining.

To itemize for my stock (unmodified) tank:

TOTAL USEABLE CAPACITY (unmodified tank): 6.05 US Gallons

TOTAL MAIN TANK CAPACITY (prior to reserve): 4.72 US Gallons

RESERVE CAPACITY (useable): 1.33 US Gallons

After modifying the tank by cutting out the restrictor:

TOTAL USEABLE CAPACITY (modified tank): 6.28 US Gallons

TOTAL MAIN TANK CAPACITY (modified tank - prior to reserve): 4.95 US Gallons

RESERVE CAPACITY (useable): 1.33 US Gallons

My speedo is about 6% - 7%, the odo is about 2% out when checked against sat-nav on a long motorway stretch on my bike, but if you consider your wheels will be going over small undulations and the road may go up / down a bit, I am not sure the sat-nav is not more focussed on A-B more like the crow flies.

My MPG calculations seem to be a couple of % different to the computer, plus the potential Odo innacuracy may equate to 4% out - then again how many vehicles are spot on, I never bothered to check my GS, or my car, or any other previous bike.

I know I get about 10 miles per litre on the odo, a tank will last past 200 miles and the light come on at about 170 with a good 40 miles to go once the light comes on, I can't see how if any of these stats are 3,4,5% out are relevant, excpet the speedo, I like to know I can go 5mph faster :)

so it sounds like not a whole lot of gain from mutilating the fillar neck. not to mention that you now have to ride the bike as soon as you fill up to avoid any kind of fuel spill and in the summer time the cap could blow out if you do overfill? rotopax or aluminum liter can inside the tool tubes anyone? did I miss something?
