Ermmm.... No,I actually think the Kawasaki Versys 1000 has a better motor than the S10. In fact, I really do miss the seamless drive of the Kawasaki motor, if the fancy takes you, you could run down to about 25mph in 6th Germany and open the throttle and it would go, OK, it wouldn’t rip your arms off, but it would pull strongly and smoothly all the way around the Rev counter. I like my S10, but the Versys has a better motor IMHO.

I've never ridden the Kawi, but, I am sure it's much smoother. . . . it's an inline four. Seamless power. Just like every other inline four, regardless of make. I'm criticizing. "Better" is going to be a personal taste thing. The more I ride my Tenere, the more I like the sounds, and feel of the big twin. But, I have been known to be a little off.

You misunderstand me. I love twins and my S10 is smoother than my Kawasaki was, but the power delivery, flexibility and perhaps the character of my old Versys 1000 is, for me at least, better than my S10. Since I started riding motorcycles 55 years ago, I have only owned 6 multi-cylinder bikes, all the others have been singles and twins, but the Versys 1000 is about the only multi I still lust after and could maybe take me away from my S10. However, having said all that, I do agree with you that the more I ride my S10, the more I enjoy it.

I’ve owned only twins since 2000. A Mille RSV for 3 years, a Caponord for a bit over 13 years and the Super Tenere for 4 and a half years, I like the characteristics of a twin engine, slightly favouring the V Twin of the Aprilia, there’s a sort of effortless laziness with a twin.
Last year, whilst in France, I spent an hour or two riding my mates S1000XR, which was superb! But, it’s not for me, it felt too frantic and a bit manic.
The year before I rode a 2nd Gen Versys, which although not having the outright power of the XR, was a different ride altogether. Never felt revvy or frantic, just power everywhere. A true peach of a motor!

GLWS It is a nice machine in a different category from S10.
My road riding partner has a 2016 Versys 1000 LT purchased new. We have ridden approx 15k miles together. He doesn't like the dirt.
The radiator and low exhaust header are vulnerable on gravel roads. He is forever cleaning and lubing the chain.
Smooth and capable on tarmac, plenty of power in any gear with good brakes and decent handling. The low gear ratios are noticeably different from S10.
It is like riding an electric motor when compared to the S10. Paying attention to the speed limit is mandatory, it will go like a scalded cat.
Hot or cold it starts instantly compared to S10. He doesn't care for the seat comfort and it is a big one piece seat to change.
The Versys is a different machine altogether, overall he likes it and would rather have it except for the chain maintenance.
The both of them have been reliable.
All the best.

I just saw that my post said that I was criticizing. It was supposed to say I was NOT. I understood what you were saying, and you're correct. It's just the nature of the beast. . . . I-4 v. twin.
No problem Sierra, I wasn’t taking offence but thanks for clarifying and I agree it is a 4 cylinder vs twin :)
