Has anyone seen this vid by Koenigsegg. Doesn't delve deep, for obvious reasons, but interesting tech I thought.

Wouldn't it be nice to do away with the cams/cam chain. I'm not clear about valve clearance issues, could be automated too. It will be interesting to see whether it could be packaged suitably for bikes, aside from the big tourers, with assured reliability in our more harsh & testing environment.

Incidentally, it is good to see the Chinese commissioning the exploration of new tech, rather than 'borrowing' ideas/design from others.

He said its a pneumatic operatd valve system, sounds similar to Honda's pneumatic valves in their MotoGP bikes.

These are actually pneumatic "operated" valves (no cams), Honda uses air in place of valve springs, but cams still are responsible for valve opening.

There's no clearance to automate if there's no cam.

I was thinking between the electro-pneumatic actuator & the valve. Surely the valve will slowly 'seat' as the miles build up, just as it does now, or is my vision of this being clouded by our historic tech.

The trouble is, when comparing with MGP & F1, their engines simply don't do the miles that retail purchasers demand, so it is difficult to draw any real comparison. To be viable for mass production I would think a working life of 150/200k miles wouldn't be unreasonable. Probably needs 24/48 v power supply for the actuators too. The instant tuneability (if that is a word) of a motor could be amazing, just with a mode switch/mapping. Sadly, we shall all have to watch & wait.
