Sorry guys, I did a search on flashing ECU on stock bikes and found many links on flashing ECU's but none that seemed to address my question, so I wanted to ask here.

I just purchased a brand new display model 2015 Super Tenere ES, haven't actually ridden it yet, but am coming from an R1, so I know the power is not going to be anything like the R1, but that's why I bought the bike, Im getting old and wanted more comfort. however I am not dead yet, so I still want some get up and go, I was wondering about getting the ECU flashed, the bike is 100% stock (in the engine, exhaust & admission) so is a flash worth doing? I want to put a full system on the bike next year and then a flash makes complete sense, but until then should I keep the ECU stock or is it still worth flashing? Flashing is expensive and if there is little to no gain then it's obviously not worth doing, I read that several places flash the ECU (AVC8130m, ECUnleashed or even my favorite company AF1 in new Braunsfel) and remove glitches and limitations, so is it worth doing it to a stock engine? or should I wait until I have fitted a new exhaust and perhaps changed the air filter, etc?

I want to get it done as I like farkling my bike, but at $400 a pop, I really want to make sure it's worth it..

Thanks for all comments, recommendations, etc.

Firstly, I would wait and ride the bike, get it past run-in, even wait until 5k miles, when the bike really loosens up, then have it flashed, if you want to, but the $400 you quoted seems high? Is that the figure you were given? Many on here have had it done and love it, I was going to get my 2012 done, then just bought a new one last year, was a lot smoother, and as I like to save up for retirement, I don't need to go any faster ::012::

unless I am misunderstanding the WEB page ECUlimited charge $450 to flash the ECU, so I thought $400 was the low end (cheaper)!! I would love to know of a cheaper option that works well. I really only wanted to flash the ECU but ECUnlimited's WEB site states you should also add a power commander, which adds another $400!!

Micah at AF1 tuned my 2 Suzuki RG500's and my 2 RZ350's for me on his rolling road, so I liked the idea of having him tune and setup my Tenere, but it's starting to look like it would cost a lot more than I really want to spend this early on. As previously stated, perhaps I should at least get the engine broken in before playing with the ECU? On my short ride back from the dealer to my house, I was not very impressed with the getup and go, which is why I am already thinking about a flash, but maybe I should give it time..

I had mine done at Jett tuning in Camarillo for $200, hand carrying the ECU to them. Some nice improvements but nothing dramatic. Reduced engine braking in S mode, not so much in T mode though. Smoother on/off throttle response but not perfect in S mode. What's really nice is that the fan comes on lower now at 195F and goes off at 205F. I used to see coolant temps running into the 220s before the fan was re-calibrated.

Largely agreeing with Dogdaze, the bike takes 3-5,000 miles to break in. Don't be surprised if it even stalls a couple of times before that. Ride it for a bit before deciding.

If you do want to flash it, I'd do the pipe at the same time or before doing the ECU.

My 13 has ecunleashed, full exhaust, power commander and auto tune. It gets it. It gets it good.
I really like the sound of the ECUnleashed (from their WEB page description) but at $450 its a bit pricey!! I see that AF1 in Austin offer this and dyno tuning, so think I will wait until next year, get a full exhaust system fitted and then take a trip to Austin and let AF1 flash the ECU and then with the dyno correct any fueling glitches.

Arrow used to be the only maker of a full system. I thought I'd heard they had discontinued them. It would be great to hear they are still making them.

It would be good to hear from others if the Arrow system has been discontinued? Many people seem to be selling them, but if they have been discontinued then I need to buy a system quickly rather than wait until next year when they might be much harder to find. I was hoping Akrapovic would offer a full system, but haven't seen anything so far.

::026:: I switched from the FJR to the Tenere, and sometimes miss the extra power. I have a completely stock motored '17ES. I've noticed a some extra grunt in the midrange since passing the 5k mileage range. The throttle will take some saddle time to get used to, I did and now love the instant response. To ME, the amount of additional power is not worth the price of the mods. (It will NEVER be an R1/FJR) But, I would make sure to get all the mods before doing the flash if you decide to go that route. Good luck either way.

Ha! Found a catalog on a translated arrow.it, it shows the headers back for a '10-'16 Tenere. Awesome. ::008::

Thrasherg,
I think you will find the ECU flash that Anthony / avc8130 flash does is well worth the $225. I had 60,000 miles on my '13 when I got mine done and I wish I had done it along time ago.
You might try the flash first before spending the $$$ on the headers and can.
I live just North of Dallas, PM me if you want to try it out.
