Over the last few decades I’ve expressed my love for the country while riding whenever I see old glory flying high and proud. I’ll get up on the pegs, face the mast, and snap a curt, proper Navy salute in heartfelt patriotic gratitude. In town, out of town, any speed, any time, anywhere.

Earlier today while riding through a small burg I often stop in for breakfast I was pulled over on the road out. The officer was smiling and more than kind when asked why. He handed me a business card and told me the local newspaper was interested in writing something up on the guy that salutes the highest flags around while standing on his motorcycle. They have pictures but no words.

I declined the card and asked him to thank them for their interest and switched the narrative to the great commemorative veteran banners they hang every summer from the lampposts on their main drag.

All branches are proudly represented by the selfless and courageous service members who gave their lives in defense of their country, families, and communities.

Getting off the bike and walking main street allows for the time to read each one with care… And there are many, too many of course.

These strolls elicit such strong emotions and respect. Every American should take a stroll like that and hopefully be viscerally affected by it.

Sadly, that sentiment is waning. All branches of the military are facing increased difficulty in reaching enlistment goals. But I guess that's OK 'cuz we'll have 87,000 well-armed IRS agents to watch over us.
